Loading 110gr .30 Carbine Bullets in .308
« on: July 06, 2012, 12:53:50 AM »
I was just wondering if anybody has used the 110gr .30 Carbine bullets in their .308's?  I can pick up a bunch for cheap and thought this might make good plinking ammo.  I'd mostly be shooting steel from 200 yards and less.

I've done it.  The old RCBS manuals listed data for this load.  I found they shot very well from my model 70 Winchester.

BTW,  if you shoot pumpkins after Halloween, these bullets really make them explode...

The current Lee manual lists 110gr jacketed data.  ;)

Did you have to download them at all or were you able to load them to full velocities?  The only reason I ask is this is for an autoloader.

Try 39.0 grs H4198 or IMR4198 under that carbine bullet. Pretty decent accuracy and it is explosive. That load will get you a little over 3000'ps. It's a bottom of the book load, Much more and the bullet comes out in pieces or it never gets to a 50 yd target, just a grey streak going down range and then it's gone. If yer in it just for effect, use 47.0 grs H335 under it. Velocity is about the same but muzzle flash is a HUGE ball of fire.
Don't know if it will work an autoloader.

Maybe I'll just try a small lot and see what happens.  I have some H335 & IMR4198, so I'll have to give that a try.  Thanks.

back about 30 years ago I used those in a 30-06 for ground hogs. SOME times I'd hit them and other times the bullets blew up in the air. When I did connect , it was like they swallowed a grenade! Critter parts every where!Yes try some and see what happens!

I looked for the lightest .30 cal I could find, a while ago,
for a lighter load and less recoil,

but settled on the 110gr V-Max instead.

Kept the velocity and recoil down with 43grs H4895

and they grouped very tight.

(bit more expensive than your cheapos, though !)

but heaps of fun to load and shoot !

cheers,
SS

I've loaded 110gr Barnes X and Sierra  bullets over BLC2 with very good accuracy. Haven't tried them on game yet but X bullet should work well.
If you just want a cheap plinking load try 150gr hard cast bullets with 10 grains of Unique it's a mild load with decent accuracy in my Ruger.

I've thought about that, but this is for a gas gun and I don't know if that would cycle it.

The little 110gr. carbine bullets also shoot well in the 30-30 Win.  They are good for cheap low-recoil practice.
