Well, I finally got tired of fighting the stupid thing. I got rid of it, kept my buckmark and single six, and used the money to fund an AR.

Yep, that works.  Sometimes you just have to send a gun on down the road.

 **Solution for OP**

I have just fixed this same issue in my Mark II. I had forgotten i had the same problem 20 years ago.

Ruger was correct, if the hammer pivot pin drift out of engaging the far side hole, even just slightly, it will cause the bolt drag problem. It doesnt seam like such a small distance would make such a problem, but it does. They reseated it, but if you removed your left grip panel after getting it back, i am sure your pivot pin backed out just slightly, causing the issue to come right back. My gun is also about 1994 vintage, i suspect they had some short pins or wide frames go out around this time.

The trick is when reassembling the gun, place your thumb over the large head of the pivot pin, verifiying that the far side is actually lined up and engaged in its hole. Immediatly replace the left grip panel and screw it down. The grip panel holds the pin from popping out and causing the bolt drag.

On my gun, this pin is little too short, if i even cycle the slide, or pull the trigger with the left grip panel off, the pin will slip out of the hole, just slightly. I plan to either buy a replacment pivot pin, hopefully it is longer, or i will machine one that is 1mm or so longer. For now everything works fine, as long as the pin is seated fullyand the left grip installed.

There is a great trouble shooting page here, your problem is #8:

I hope this helps.

Did you call Ruger back?
Did you try cleaning the chamber again?
Are you still using the same ammo and getting the same results? If so, hmmm.......
FWIW, after way too many years of shooting and 10s of thousands of rounds, recent boxes of waxed lead bullet 22LR do not freely chamber up in several of my 'closely' chambered guns. Yes, the chambers are clean. Running them trough my old Paco Kelly sizer finds quite a variation in felt bullet diameter, and fixes them right up. Quality control is nowhere near what it once was, IMHO.Semi-autos have always been notorious for being picky about ammo. Waxed lead bullets have sometimes also been notorious. Try some 'flash plated' (you know, the copper looking ones) 22HV ammo in newly cleaned chamber. I use a q-tip dipped in solvent to wipe and dry chambers. Bad ones need the spun brush on a short rod. Always dry the chamber.
