Photos: A closer look at the 'God particle'        by Frank Jordans, Associated Press Video report by Atika Shubert, CNN Posted on July 7, 2012 at 11:31 PM       Gallery  See all 41 photos »  BERLIN (AP) -- Scientists working at the world's biggest atom smasher near Geneva have announced the discovery of a new subatomic particle that looks remarkably like the long-sought Higgs boson. Sometimes called the "God particle" because its existence is fundamental to the creation of the universe, the hunt for the Higgs involved thousands of scientists from all over the world.
WHAT IS THE GOD PARTICLE ANYWAY?
School physics teaches that everything is made up of atoms, and inside atoms are electrons, protons and neutrons. They, in turn, are made of quarks and other subatomic particles. Scientists have long puzzled over how these minute building blocks of the universe acquire mass. Without mass, particles wouldn't hold together and there would be no matter.
One theory proposed by British physicist Peter Higgs and teams in Belgium and the United States in the 1960s is that a new particle must be creating a "sticky" field that acts as a drag on other particles. The atom-smashing experiments at CERN, the European Center for Nuclear Research, have now captured a glimpse of what appears to be just such a Higgs-like particle.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
The Higgs is part of many theoretical equations underpinning scientists' understanding of how the world came into being. If it doesn't exist, then those theories would need to be fundamentally overhauled. The fact that it apparently does exist means scientists have been on the right track with their theories. But there's a twist: the measurements seem to diverge slightly from what would be expected under the so-called Standard Model of particle physics. This is exciting for scientists because it opens the possibility to potential new discoveries including a theory known as "super-symmetry" where particles don't just come in pairs - think matter and anti-matter - but quadruplets, all with slightly different characteristics.
HOW MUCH DID IT COST?
CERN's atom smasher, the Large Hadron Collider, alone cost some $10 billion to build and run. This includes the salaries of thousands of scientists and support staff around the world who collaborated on the two experiments that independently pursued the Higgs.
WERE THERE ANY PRACTICAL RESULTS FROM THE SEARCH?
Not directly. But the massive scientific effort that led up to the discovery has paid off in other ways, one of which was the creation of the World Wide Web. CERN scientists developed it to make it easier to exchange information among each other. The vast computing power needed to crunch all of the data produced by the atom smasher has also boosted the development of distributed - or cloud - computing, which is now making its way into mainstream services. Advances in solar energy capture, medical imaging and proton therapy - used in the fight against cancer - have also resulted from the work of particle physicists at CERN and elsewhere.
WHAT'S NEXT
"This is just the beginning," says James Gillies, a spokesman for CERN. Scientists will keep probing the new particle until they fully understand how it works. In doing so they hope to understand the 96 percent of the universe that remains hidden from view. This may result in the discovery of new particles and even hitherto unknown forces of nature.
Eureka! Physicists celebrate evidence of particle

An unfortunate name, perhaps, but good and legitimate science. CERN has done many research projects during its long life span, and many are very well coordinated with other experiments to run the lab efficiently. Keep in mind that, compared to its value in science, relatively little money is spent on physics research. You may think this is odd stuff, but it is valuable and it does eventually trickle into our lives. For example, a lot of what has been done with electronics and medical devices stems from the thought processes that are needed to investigate matter, and the results of those researches.

Current situation with the "God particle" is that existence now seems likely, but results are not conclusive.

It's not political crap. Quite the contrary, it's science in spite of political pressure to stop what is perceived to be nonsense research by a bunch of egg heads.

Confirmation of the Higgs Boson is probably the largest scientific discovery of the century. This is a breakthrough not seen since the electron was discovered more than 100 years ago. Particle physics is the other end of the spectrum equal to space exploration. Along with quantum nonlocality (entanglement), this discovery will open new vistas in communication and information exchange.
The big question "what is gravity" and how do we benefit from it, may soon be answered. This could be a first step to moving past our steam engine rockets.

Unfortunate choice for a name, has nothing to do with God or any concept related to God. The particle is "somethimg" that slows down energy so that it becomes matter. Everything is either energy or matter, air, rock water, or light, heat, radio waves, etc.
-
The Higgs boson governs the state of "particles" to determine not only if it is energy or "matter" but also what kind of "matter". (I thought it interesting that two equal energies can occupy the same space at the same time.)
-

All the elements listed on the periodic table is all the types of matter that we have identified. Electrons, neutrons and protons that are moveing within thier orbits or nuclei. The energy of a nuclear bomb comes from splitting one of the lightest types of atom, hydrogen. The Higgs boson holds all that energy in check so that energy becomes Matter.
-
All matter held in state by the Higgs boson, without it there would only be energy: heat, light radio waves or unformed matter, there would be no lements everything would collapse in on it's self because of no energy.
-
This is not exactly correct but it is the best that I can interpret what I have read. I am sure that there are those here smarter than me that can make the Higgs boson more understandable.

It is this mythical, or rather this symbolic, content of the religious traditions which is likely to come into conflict with science. This occurs whenever this religious stock of ideas contains dogmatically fixed statements on subjects which belong in the domain of science. Thus, it is of vital importance for the preservation of true religion that such conflicts be avoided when they arise from subjects which, in fact, are not really essential for the pursuance of the religious aims.

 - Albert Einstein, Religion and Science: Irreconcilable? (1948)

Science investigates; religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge which is power; religion gives man wisdom which is control. Science deals mainly with facts; religion deals mainly with values. The two are not rivals. They are complementary.

We traded immortality for the search for knowledge. It is the most noble thing mankind can do. Politics have always muddied the water. The wasted resources with NASA is a sad example. Even with massive funds being siphoned off, they have done marvelous things.

The press seized on this 'god' label to further discredit faith in God. As eloquently explained in previous posts, it is called the Higgs boson.  How dull.

Perhaps I misunderstood this statement, or quote. What ever it is.

Eve was tricked by the Trickster of all trickster, i.e. Satan. Adam traded immortality to be with Eve, and being noble, or a quest for knowledge had nothing to do with it.

EAR. I think that scientists have been trying for many years to disprove Gods existence but that it usually backfires on them. Calling it The God particle got everybodys attention. P.A. said it right in saying that the God label was chosen to discredit Christians. POWDERMAN.  :o :o
