You can remove the ejector and spring but you can't have sausage fingers if you're gonna pluck 'em out through the ejection port!
My friend Rick Taylor shot a 30-378 in a SHORT action Rem 700 for his BR gun. He just removed the boltstop altogether and pulled the bolt with the spent brass still under the extractor right out the back of the receiver each shot. Of course, he had removed the ejector so the brass stayed put during all this. At one time he held the 1000 yard world record with that rifle, so I guess he knew what he was doing!
