Any experience with Hi Viz SA Front Sight on Blackhawk
« on: December 21, 2011, 06:38:24 PM »
Has anyone installed one of the Hi Viz SA Front Sights on a Blackhawk?

http://shopruger.com/Hi-Viz-SA-Front-Red-Sight/productinfo/12008/
Any recommendations for the Green vs Red? Is it something that a gunsmith should install?
Anything else to consider with these? Thanks in advance.

After looking at my Blackhawk, it appears it does not have a pinned on front sight. Are there any other options for making the front sight more visible?

In the old days before commercial options were readily available... on any ramp front sights we simply dovetailed red inserts into the ramp made from fluorescent red or orange toothbrush handles.   Not hard to do with a couple of good files to cut the dovetail in the ramp and one to match the ramps serrations if it has them, and simply epoxy them in.   On non-ramped we just painted the rear vertical surface of the blade white, or installed a strip made from the TB handles with epoxy.    Was also common to make rear blades outlined by simply etching/engraving the lines on the blade and filling them with white paint or wire silver.   Also not hard to do with just hand tools.

To me, putting a hiviz sight on a Blackhawk is like dressing a Longhorn Steer in a pink tutu.

I use on sights  Truglo Glo-Brite Bright Sight Paint     Like the bright green for daylight and low light. easy to put on remove and replace. the kit is about $20.

I have fiber optics on a Hunter, GP100 and RedHawk.  They are not as high as I would like but I can finally see them, and shoot better.  I had to make fiber optics for a Savage 1899, and a Dan Wesson revolver.  Big improvement!

Before I learned to shoot, I used to use glow in the dark model paint or bright sexy finger nail polish.  Now that I know how to shoot, they are black.

I have used the Hi Viz on muzzle loaders and shot guns.  My muzzle loader I use the fiber optic as point of aim.  Shot gun, pass and lead.  IMHO, they would be too big for me to use on a BH and 6 o'clock hold....but I have not tried one.

Gun with sweated on front sight will be hard to replace by yourseld.  Sight with changable blade by removing roll pin, and/or screw on sights should be easy.

As  one gets older and has cataracts the fiber optic front sight makes a lot of sense.  The only single action I have them on is a Single Six 32 H&R mag. and it works very well.

I also have old eyes so on my blackhawk I drilled a small hole on the front site and used epoxy to glue in a piece of fiber optis green and it works fine I can see my front sight. I have shot about 100 times and the sight is still there. Bill

Milled the front sight blade off and had dove tail cut in sight base. Use Williams fire sight front sight. You can get them in several different heights. A dove tail sight pusher for removing or installing makes changing for different loads easy. Have had several revolvers set up this way. Makes the front sight a lot easier to see in hunting conditions.

A good friend, and fine target shot with any of the 'old' standard sights, acquired a SS Sgl. Six with some kind of high viz front and an 'express' shallow V rear. It shoots wonderfully, and easily, to point of aim even when done back to back with typical undercut Patridge type sights on the same course of fire. I should mention that the express rear does have that center white line, you just put that glowing ball atop the line and shoot. I am a traditionalist, so it 'looks' a little 'off', but if it is holes in the right place under various light conditions, this seems to be a winner.
