Relining a Springfield Trapdoor Barrel
« on: August 09, 2012, 04:12:09 PM »
For those of you that have a Springfield Trapdoor (TD) or for that matter, any antique “shooter” that has a pitted or damaged bore, you may be interested in the following article.  I decided to have a TD carbine barrel relined and did a good bit of research on the subject, which you may find interesting.  Click on the following link to the article:

Wayne, I'm never too old to learn new things. And did not know that trapdoor barrels could be relined in the origional 45-70 caliber. Thanks for sharing. Frank

I have heard nothing but good things about Bobby Hoyt, his barrels are pretty much the standard among skirmishers who want rifled muskets that are really accurate. I didn't know he installed liners and then rifled them in place, that's a neat trick. Thanks for the writeup!

Hi guys,

There was a typo in the article, which has been corrected.  Bobby Hoyt uses 12L14 stock for making his liners, not 12F14.

I had one done many years ago by Dale Wise Custom Guns of San Antonio. It worked fabulously. I've had them do a few others of different models of rifles and they all shoot better than I expected. I haven't been to the shop in over 10 years now so I don't know if they still do that kind of work but if you're in Texas or don't want to wait in a long line, it might be worth the phone call. If I don't tell you it's a reline, you'll never see it, it's that good.
