Since I plan on getting my 223 Ultra and sending it in for a 30-06 barrel, I might as well find out what most of the H&R 30-06's like to be fed.  Do they do well with 180gr loads?

Now i once heard that the 30-06 was once good for all game from moose on down to squirrel. I heard that you can use the 180 grain loads.

As Big Mortie once said,
fill the brass to the top with powder, then jam the bullet in. That's a compressed load!

handirifle;
my handi 06 likes anything in the 150gr-165gr weight class
it will shoot at or near moa with all the factory loads ive used (rem. fed. win.) also with handloads in same weight. poi will change between brands.
i havent shot anything over 165gr in factory loads yet....but did hand load some 180gr speer hotcor rn.
it didnt group as well with the heavier bullets......but im still working on the load.....weather permitting.
groups with the 180's was about 2.5 to 3 inchs.
the barrel is really heat sensitive and will vertical string if over heated.
whitch is not a big problem with a single shot rifle.....but you have to take your time between shots.

My 30-06 shoots everything well.  By that I mean I can hit a 4"pie plate out to 250 yards, with anything from 100 grain plinkers, to Barnes 250 gr.  But for long ranges I use 165gr boattails, and 125gr boattails.  The 165s I use for Caribou and Black Bear.  The 125s I use for Wolves and varmits.  They shoot well out to 400 yards, thats my limit not the guns.
You can be under gunned, But never over gunned.

Thanks for the feedback.  By the way, did you notice whether or not the '06 has the same long throat issues the 223's seem to have?
