30-30 Handi vs Savage M340?
« on: July 21, 2012, 02:40:20 AM »
Wanting a 30-30 myself, torn between a scoped Handi w/extra 20 ga barrel ($150) or a scoped Sav 340 ($250).  Never had a Handi and was unsure if they were accurate rifles (not that the Sav is a tack driver either).  Anyone have or had both and can offer advice.

I can't tell you anything about the Savage, but the Handi .30-30 is perhaps the most inherently accurate of all Handi calibers.  I have never heard of one that wouldn't shoot superbly well.  Mine will shoot 3/4 inch groups at 100 if I do my part, and it doesn't seem to be very particular about what you feed it.

I have had both of them, the Savage is a nice old gun and works well.  If you want a repeater buy the Savage, if you want a single shot them buy the H&R.  They will weigh about the same and shoot about the same.  Larry

A big plus for the Handi is the take-down, easy to pack.  And for that price I'd sure buy it.

The Handi is a better deal and a better gun....

Please explain to me what makes a Handi a better gun than the Savage. My money would go on the Savage any day of the week. It'd make a good companion to my Savage Sporter 25-20. ;)

The Savage is definately a better gun than the H&R is.  But, the H&R is a hundred bucks cheaper, so I would say they have valued the guns about right.  Get the one that you feel good about, they will both kill a deer.  Larry

The handis big advantage is if you reload. Guns and Ammo did an article on 30-30+P loads something like 10 years ago. The Handi can handle the pressure, the Savage can't.

I want to add both to my collection, but they are so different that it is hard to compare.

If you can find a Remington 788 in 30-30 at a decent price, then you will truly have a very good repeater. A 30-30 in a Handi is a very good shooter too, I have one and like it very well. Never owned a Savage 340, but have had a 788 in 222 and wish I never let it go. Had one come up for sale locally, they wanted $475 for it. I can build a new Savage for not much more than that so I did not get it.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Once upon a time I had a Savage 340 in .222 Remington. I found it to be an typical of an older economy rifle with a little bit of character to boot. Mine had a side mount scope setup which left a lot to be desired. You might want to consider that when making your choice.
