FA 44 Magnum
« on: July 30, 2012, 01:11:00 AM »
It seems as I get older I have kinda got tried of the hard kickers. It seems like a 44 mag would be the way to go. I have read that in the model 83 the 44 just does not kick that hard. Does anybody have one? Seems that Taffin likes them. I will have to say that I am a 45 Colt man. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yes I have one with 7.5" barrel I've had a long time. It is comfortable to shoot with any and all .44 mag loads I've tried so far. Because of the tight tolerances there is a lot of small specialty ammo company ammo that will not chamber in it.

I have some Buffalo Bore and Grizzly ammo that chamber fine in my S&W 629 but not in the FA83.

My standard load for my FA83 .454 Casual was a 320 grain cast bullet at 1550 fps and it was never uncomfortable to shoot. The .44 mag is the same gun just with smaller holes and you are really stretching it to load anything to that level in a .44 magnum so anything you do load most likely will be quite pleasant to shoot.

With the 240 XTP the FA83 44 mag has less felt recoil at 1300 fps than the FA97 44 special has at 1150 fps.  I find it easier to shoot an FA 83 with best accuracy due to the extra weight.  I should also mention that it is easy to load the 454 to 44 mag levels so there is no need for a 454 to be abusive IF you reload.  My 454 is at least as accurate as my 44 mag and shoots 300 grain bullets with less blast than the 44 mag when loaded to similar performance.

The FA 97s are super light and handy -- I love to shoot them even if I am not quite as accurate.  For me it's FA 83s for serious hunting and FA 97s for everything else.

I would like to know what you shoot now. I have a FA83 in .44 magnum and find it pleasant to shoot. However, I reload and am working up my reloads as I have not shoot a lot of Big Bores. In an FA83 even at hot loads I think it has a stout snap to it. It is a heavier gun compared to a Ruger and that is to your benefit IMO.
