DuPont IMR 4227 1960's load data?
« on: July 25, 2012, 06:37:28 AM »
So I have two pounds of 1960's era IMR 4227 powder that I was hoping to use for plinker rounds.  Talked to Hodgdon folks and they said not to use the modern IMR 4227 recipes, the old stuff is too hot.  Anyone have a old reloading manual from the 60's?  I'm hoping for a load for 38 spl or 357 mag to be used in a Handi rifle.  Thanks.

I have an OLD Speer and Lyman manual laying around in the reloading room.
Will dig 'em out and write back shortly.

How about out of a Speer manual dated 1970? Loads as follows for jacketed bullets:
38 Special- Test firearm Smith K38 6"
158gr-start 11.5grs, max 12.5grs =1077'ps
160gr-start 10.0grs, max 12.0grs =976'ps

357 Mag- Test firearm Smith Model 27 6"
110gr- start 20.0grs, max 22.0grs =1532'ps
125gr- start 18.0grs, max 20.0grs =1467'ps
158gr- start 14.5grs, max 15.5grs =1221'ps
160gr- start 13.0grs, max 15.0grs =1131'ps
 Speer lead bullet
158gr SWC start 14.0grs, max 15.0grs =1243'ps

AS you are probably aware, the 357 mag is a whisper of what it's original design was, with far lower pressures than back in the 60's. The original design had pressures at 47,500 CUPs but few pistols, namely Smiths, could stand up to a full diet of full house loads. Since all of the cheap imports have hit our shores, the pressures were reduced again to compensate for the cheap crapola folks were buying for pistols. It's not much of a magnum today.

Big thanks!!!  I was afraid I'd have to throw out perfectly good powder.  This is the load I was hoping to find.  Perfect for plated bullets at 50 yds.

How about out of a Speer manual dated 1970? Loads as follows for jacketed bullets:
38 Special- Test firearm Smith K38 6"
158gr-start 11.5grs, max 12.5grs =1077'ps
