My RWS Model 52 shoots funny.
« on: July 27, 2004, 08:52:49 AM »
I have had an RWS Model 52 side pump rifle in .22 since the late 90's, with fairly low mileage put on it, est. 300-400 rounds.  It is usually used for pest control, shot at ranges around 60 yards at crows on the ground, from a 2 story window, so there is not a trajectory problem to adjust for.  And also used on house sparrows and starlings under 20 feet in the local tree using a horizontal angle, no down or up shots like the crows.

I have also used it at my local rifle range, and historically had to aim high at the 50 and 100 yard targets as it really has a trajectory drop when shooting on an even plain.  I had mounted a 4 X scope with the RWS mount setup around the year 2000, seemed fine those years in performance, but  was missing alot of shots the last 9 months, had read that the RWS guns were not really intended for scopes, so took it off.  I also found that the adjustable rear site seems to need periodic adjustment over the years, when the scope was not used, my regular firearms do not need adjustment after I get everything sited.

Took it to the rifle range yesterday, and the rifle was shooting very high at 50 yards and also, 25 yards.  Set the rear site down as far as it would go, and it still shoots 4" high at 25 yards, also had to adjust the windage again, seems like it is adjusted on a regular basis.  I tried it at home that night with my bench mount into the hallway of the house into an old book to stop the pellet and it was right on to the target at 20 feet.  Checked the action to stock hold down screw, was tight.  Rifle is well cared for otherwise.  I used to have a new RWS 34 that was very moody on the windage POI, I did not trust to shoot it out of the windows of the house as it would periodically go off to the side of where I was aiming and hit the outside railing for no reason.  Sold it.  Why is this gun, and my RWS 52 acting like it has bi-polar syndrome?

I thought RWS products were supposed to be of high quality?

Thanks.
