The rifle was made as a centennial celebration limited issue in the mid 70's.

They had two models, one trimmed in brass and the other in browned steel.
I don't think they ever called it a Hawken,, it's always been a Mountain Rifle.

At first people felt it was just a knock off that was simply a mix of assorted parts and wouldn't amount to anything. Very shortly they where found to have tack driving accuracy and surprisingly reliable.

Because of the limited issue, the Rilfes today command high prices, lowest I've seen was $600 and as high as $1600 for mint in the box with papers,

I owned a .50 and a .54.  Neither were very accurate.

Don't pay any attention to Swampgas Dogmann. The Browning " mountain rifle" is a great gun as is most anything Browning puts its name on.  :).

I'd say that's clearly not the case with Browning products but may have been at on time.  Browning didn't even make these rifles.  They were pretty but they were poor shooters.  I've probably seen 100 post that said the same thing about them.

Browning does not make (mfg.) anything. But they require whoever does to meet their strict mfg. specs. Before they will put their name on the product.  :o Dogmann take a  count on the posts on this thread and you will see one person who is trolling here. Then count how many speak well of the Browning mountain rifle.
You do the math...

I have more experience than anyone else here with muzzleloaders.  I owned 2 (make that 3) of these rifles.  Two were the browned steel .50 caliber versions and one was a brass mounted .54.  Others may blow smoke up your dress but I will tell you the truth based on personal experience and careful research.  What you choose to do with the truth is up to you.  They quit making them because they were expensive an not very accurate.  They are pretty but not very historically accurate either.

The 13" group at 50 yards sounds about normal.

I've been building, shooting, and collecting muzzleloaders for over 35 years.  I've worked with and owned guns built by some of the best in the country.  I've hunted with and built almost every type of muzzleloader commonly available including inlines.  I've attended hundreds of matches and living history events with the very best living historians in the country.  I've done thousands of hours of research on original and reproduction muzzleloading firearms.  I've made and sold bags, horns, clothing, and every item that is connected with muzzleloading firearms.

Regards,

I wish that was true , check out the SALT treated wood they used on gun stocks . I had an O/U that went back to the factory 3 times before it would fire the second bbl. It took almost 11 mos. to get fixed.

I once believed that the Browning mountain rifle was the ultimate muzzleloader.  I never got the chance to buy one, but from all I've heard, it was a piece of crap.  Much better to spend the extra dollars and by a hand made Hawken, or one of the Italian offerings.  Consider ther reason why the Jonathan Browning Mountain Rifle lived such a short life.  It was Chinese junk.

What does Browning make in house ? They seem to contract most projects . Often parts are made one place and assymbled another.

I looked at them when they were new, never bought one...

I knew enough about muzzleloaders from building them and examining originals that I wasn't impressed...Can't imagine anyone that really knew muzzleloaders buying one..... :)

I don't know much, I've only been shooting and making flintlocks since the early 70s...
