It was a lot of hard work getting the siding on the coop, but I think it came out very well.

Once the siding was on the coop then my Daughter and my wife set about painting the interior of the white.

As my wife and daughter painted, I worked on insulating the roof of the coop.

The Thermostat that I chose to install was intended to be used for a heat register. I took it apart and rewired it to work in the coop.

I mounted the Thermostat to the plate of the power box.

Then I wired it into the coop

The lowest setting of the Thermostat is 45 degrees...that is pleanty for the inside of the coop...so I just have it set at the lowest setting.

The Egg Boxes are painted chocolate brown. This makes them appear darker and more enviting to a hen that is looking for a place to lay her eggs.

When I was a kid I raised buff orpingtons. Those fat little things can fly pretty good straight up. When their wings feather out you may want to clip the feathers off of one wing on each bird so your neighbors don't have chickens as well.  :D  They will just get off the ground a little and land on their back a few times. After that they quit trying until the next year when the feathers grow out again. You may have roosters, but often hens can be very aggressive when young as well. They have to establish their pecking order. After that they settle down besides the occasional fight over a bug.

I haven't had any problems with the birds flying as yet...but that has been a concern.

One of my pullets has turned out to be a cockerel...his name is "Pecker"....and he has become very protective of his girls. We are not allowed to keep cockerels, roosters or cocks....so I need to find "Pecker" a home or make him the center piece of one of our dinners.

The roof of the coop is hinged so that I can get into it and make any major repairs that happen to creep up. Its a nice access point to the coop.

You can see where my vents will go, and I have the boxes installed for the lighting and the heat lamp.

I attached two 2x6's to the sides of the coop so that we would have something to hold onto while we moved the coop into position. It took 3 adults and my 14 year old son to move the coop. We had it where I wanted it, in about 15 minutes or so.

The roofing material is Ice & Water Shield....it was so easy to install. I'll have to post next spring how it did over the coming winter.

This is the area that will be the run.

I am worried about smells, with the coop being so close to the house, so I put down compost from the garden and I've been adding grass clippings. I keep it turned with a pitch fork and so far no noticable smells. But keep in mind, I only have just a few chickens and 2 ducks....not a large number of birds.

Here;s a view of the run from the back after that back panel of the run has been installed. You can see the mulch that I have put in the run. The birds turn this material constantly as they scratch and look for bugs and grubs in it.

I think those chickens may have a better house than a lot of people.  ;D  Good job. Give us an update on em' when you get time please.

BTW, about being worried about the smell. Lyme is what I use under the coturnix pen. Their droppings have a very strong ammonia smell. Every month I shovel some lyme on it. In the Spring it's tilled under and feed is planted in the strip.

Its been a long time since I've up dated this thread. The coop is completed, has been for quite some time and the pullets have grown and filled out nicely.

The pullets love their new home.

My family has a deep and meaningful love and appreciation for the outdoors. I love the outdoors. I love Hunting, Fishing and Camping; and I cherish the memories made and the time spent with family and friends while doing these outdoors activities. My daughter's Fiance', my wife, and I have been doing a little fishing lately at some of the old fishing holes that I used to frequent as a kid. Unfortunately, the weather has not been cooperating very much at all. Seems every time we go there has been a thunderstorm. This last time we sat through a down pour that lasted over an hour...there was no delay between the flash of lightening and the boom of the thunder. It was right on top of us. We've had some very strange weather this summer here in Colorado; Drought, Fires and now Floods...it's been Biblical.

While we were headed home from fishing, we noticed that the ditch-rider had shut off the water to the irrigation ditch that runs behind may parents' house...this is where I grew up, the home where we had poultry when I was a young kid.

Cajun Boil was on my mind when we hit the canal the next morning, with 5 gallon buckets and seines. My Dad, the Fiance', my Son, and I spent nearly 2 hours wading the shallow waters of the canal collecting Crayfish. The waters were murky and the catch, by hand, was challenging. We probably saw one tenth of the crayfish that were in the areas that we hunted; we caught about a 3rd of what we saw. When we got them home I needed to flush-out the crayfish for a few hours in fresh clean water. I emptied out the duck's water tub, washed it with bleach and in went the crayfish to wash them out before everyone arrived for dinner. We ran a stream of fresh water through the tub for 4 hours to help flush-out the crayfish. Usually I like to do this for 24 hours, but time did not allow.

We soon realized that we had way more crayfish than we and our dinner guests could eat. It took a little over an hour to sort the crayfish between the ones that we wanted to eat and the ones that would be going back into the irrigation canal.

While we were sorting my son came out and asked, "Hey Dad what's wrong with your chickens?". I looked over in time to see the pullets stealing crayfish out of our sorting tub.

It was a great dinner for about 16 of our guests. We had 3 huge platters of crayfish, fresh corn on the cob, suasage & chicken jambalaya and red beans & rice....I was stuffed. Good memories, great people and wonderful times.

Love your thread Rock Isle, and your experiences are similar to my own. My wife and I picked out 4 "commercial black" and 4 "dixie rainbows" from the local feed and seed in april. They've grown up over the last 4 months and with the addition of a young dominique rooster we've got a wonderful addition to the family. The black hens resemble barred rocks and the brown hens look like rhode islands. They are friendly but fussy, they freerange in a half acre with a 6ft chainlink, they love to get treats and always come running but only the rooster likes to get petted. Real glad we have them, they're not laying yet but are a blast to watch, not too messy and are well worth having, eggs or not:-).  Jeff
