SW Model 29
« on: June 05, 2012, 12:21:43 PM »
I just bought my son a SW Model 29 from a friend for $ 500.00. The gun was made in 1976 and it has the wide target hammer and trigger. Was this factory or added later? The firearm was in mint condition, with the cylinder showing almost no evidence of multiple cocking. Did I get a good deal?

I'd say so.  How long is the barrel?

The barrel is six inches and the gun has a blue finish.

I believe that trigger and hammer were factory standard, at the born on date? Can't remember seeing one, without them?

FWIW, in the early mid 70's I was a smith in CA for a while, and 29's were very popular then, mostly due to the Dirty Harry movies.  And maybe more so at our shop as it was only a few miles from where Eastwood lived, and where some of the scenes in a couple of the movies was filmed at his private gun club in Carmel Valley.   Actually, all S&W revolvers were quite popular in that area then, including with the huge population of troops at Fort Ord and down at Fort Hunter Ligget.   So there was a never ending supply of S&W's in the shop for sale or for custom work.   At that time anyway, new S&W revolvers of some models were offered either with or without target triggers and hammers right from S&W.   We had a steady business installing/fitting them on those that did not, modifying to white outline rear/red ramp front sights and tuning actions.    I was on the BOD of Eastwood and Garner's gun club for about 3 years and shot 29's and other S&W models regularly in matches there as well.    That's also where we test fired all firearms we had done work on requiring it before releasing them back to their owners.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I have the N frame in Model 27.  It came from the factory with the features you mention.

My new, well used but unfired S&W m29 has all the factory goodies on it and i paid under $699 with the blue plastic case and the wood presentation case too.  The S&W N Frames rock.
