Deer dying from fly virus down south...

Don't know if anyone else heard about this yet.  There's some areas that are swampy that these larvae can hatch from that are losing up to 95% of their deer.  We're considering stopping the hunt in our region to try to make sure there are more deer to survive and rebuild.  8(  Guess the drought opened up the mud and allowed this to happen according to DNR officers here.

I am concerned, living in south central Michigan puts us right in the area hit pretty hard. I walked up on a yearling a couple days ago that should have high-tailed it outa there, seemed to look right thru me and went back to feeding. Strange. We will be in the E.U.P. for opening day, don't think I'll try and harvest one at home this year.   Scott B.

This is what happens when a reporter doesn't know what they are talking about...
 
We have this happen every year, somewhere in North Carolina and they always make it sound worse than it is...
 
Look at the facts...Michigan's deer herd is 1.7 MILLION...60,000 deer are killed on the highway each year...4,217 deer have been reported found dead with the disease...Hunters kill 422,000 deer a year in the state...
 
What they need to do is ban automobiles, they are killing too many deer!!! :)
 
I don't see where it says 95% of the deer have been killed in area???

Sorry flintlock.  That article didn't say 95%.  The DNR Officer we spoke to stated he'd been in places in Ionia County where it was 95%.  I don't even think the full brunt of this has hit the news yet.  Not trying to be sensationalistic, but what I understand is it's getting worse per the officer.

I live in one of the "red" counties and I can say for sure there is a problem. I have 5 acres and use to see deer frequently in yard. NADA now. Two game cameras have been taking great shots of squirrels but few deer. We really won't know the extent until bow hunting has been in for a while as well as farmers cutting their fields and more carcasses are found. I agree the deer herd is huge in MI but in some areas hit hard you will be hard pressed to see deer. Last year, one of my "hot" spots where I have killed deer pretty much at will basically has very little sign. Few miles down the road and no problem. The EHD is very localized based upon midge larva populations and exposure of the underlying mud which allows them to hatch. Hard frost/freeze will kill the midge so maybe this weekend will help us out. DNR page has pretty decent discussion on it. I am not overly worried since deer rebound pretty fast in areas both from lack of pressure and migration to the areas from surrounding areas. Still crummy to walk up on carcasses of nice bucks in velvet. If you have limited areas to hunt and yours is affected you will see personally the reduction in deer herd. Good news is deer that survive gain some immunity.

Just talked to a friend, they lease about 300 acres in the K-zoo area. They found several dead deer and contacted the DNR. DNR came in and found 400 dead in the area--woodsrunner
