Valmet 412 S accuracy issues
« on: August 13, 2012, 03:00:07 PM »
I have used a 412s 12/30-06 for 30 years.  It was a perfect gun for a working deer hunting guide and I got so used to it that I have carried it ever since.  All the years I had it,however, it never really shot well.  It could hold an 8 inch circle at 100 yards but not much better then that.  On a couple of occasions I had "gunsmiths" look at it but I never trusted their analysis.  One said it was a problem with the small barrell overheating and throwing shells, another said that the 12 gage magnum made the scope slip in the mounts (I have a look through mount so it sits pretty high).  I did not put much stock in either of their opinions but had no answer myself.  Recently I took it to a new gunsmith who was more highly recommended and he says that the twist in the barrell will not stabilize a heavy bullet like a 180 or greater.  He says he had very good results with a 150 grain bullet.

What do you think, does this make sense to you guys?

Did he bother to tell you what twist it had?  If not, use a brush and a rod to determine the twist rate and then do some reading.  You can quickly determine if he is on the mark or full of it.  To remove any doubt, try some 150s yourself.

I have not picked the gun up yet so I cant figure out the twist.  I will ask him when I pick it up.  Does the logic make sense to you?  Have you ever heard of such a thing?

I'd buy the poor scope mounting over the twist story in a heardbeat.  Why aren't you useing the Valmet scope mount??  Mounted properly, it cures all of those problems...

I've shot a lot of 180's and 200's in 412's, and never saw one that didn't shoot them well.  I also NEVER saw or even heard of a 412 that shot that bad!

I'd be looking for a loose bbl in the bbl band, or even a broken or cracked weld on the bbl regulation adjusters...

I have to agree with Drillingman.

You should be using the Valmet scope mount to get the most accuracy out of your gun.

Its not the twist which I believe is 1:12 here is a 100 yard shot with a 180 gr bullet

Did you check the vertical and windage adjustments to see if they are tight.  Is your gun on face?

Do you have a picture of your gun?

Don't know if DougK's group of one was intended to teach a point but here it is in my view. If your hunting with a single shot how many times do you get to shoot at a game animal. IMO its far more important where the first shot goes.
How many shots did you shoot to get a 8" group?

What does it mean "to be on face".  I picket the gun up yesterday and just checked the windage/elevation knobs;  they seem tight.  Is this how one checks them?

I am taking it out to shoot later this week and see if I dan duplicate the gunsmiths accuracy.

Where does one buy a valmet scope mount.  It does not pop up on a google search.

Hey Byron,

I come from the cold bore shot school.   ;D

To check the gun face, remove the fore end and seeing if there is any play between the barrels and receiver.

I just picked up a Valmet 412 mount on gun broker.  Will you be removing the mount often or are you going to leave it on all the time?  What size scope are you going to use?  I just removed a EAW mount from the 12/30-06 when I replaced the Leupold VX-II 2-8 with a Zeiss 1.8-5.5.  The EAW has 2 screws vs the Valmet 1 screw.
