Round count on your stock Handi's ?
« on: August 16, 2012, 07:03:24 AM »
Though I bought my  45-70 Handi rifle new about 15 years ago I have only put about 350 rounds through it. It has never seen a factory round and has only seen my handloads which were 300 gr. JHP's and  now 405 gr.  Rem SP's , both loaded at trapdoor levels. It is totally bone stock, it's never been modified in any manner and has all original factory parts.  Knock on wood, Ive never had a problem with the rifle.

I'm just curious, among you fellow Handi rifle and BC owners that also have unmodified, totally stock pieces, how many total, trouble free of any kind rounds have yours seen ?  Any high round count rifles out there that meet this criteria ?

My 30-30 has gone over 600 I'm certain, just really like shooting it.   If I ever get my mitts on a .357 I'm gonna sit on my back deck and try to wear it out with .38 wadcutters.

None of my Handis have a lot of rounds thru them, a couple hundred at the most, but one member had over 3500 rounds thru his 38-55 Target with only a hammer spring replaced before the barrel loosened up, likely because he didn't lube the pivot regularly. Same thing happens to a lot of used H&R Shotguns you'll find.

About 750 mainly due to load development and some hunting over 3 years.  ;)  Some were heavier and some were lighter.  I even shot a few hundred .457 RB over unique powder through it for varmints.  ;)

I've got over 4000 rounds through my 223 BB and not so much as a hic-up , granted I have changed stocks on it to a custom set I made just to shoot P-dogs , I needed something with a flatter forarm to better fit sand bags .

Other than a good cleaning every couple hundred rounds its still chugging along !  :D :D :D

I've got a 44mag with 2000 rounds, mostly handloads, and a 223 accessory barrel on the same reciever that has a 1000 rounds.  So the reciever has seen over 3000 rounds.  No problems with it.  Only modifications are replacing butt stock with a survivor stock, and silicone bedding the forestocks.  I have never disassembled the reciever or done a trigger job.  I clean the barrels when accuracy falls off if shooting copper, or after every session if shooting lead.

I think i have all of you folks beat. I have had a 17HMR for 7 years and never fired a shot through it.  No problems with that one at all.

The one of mine that has the most rounds through it hands down is the .357, but it doesn't meet your criteria.  It's chopped to 16.5 inches with a recessed target crown and reamed to Maxi.  I would estimate 1 - 2 thousand .38s, perhaps 9 - 1200 or so mags and 800 to 1000 maxies down the tube.  It gets fired and goes with me just about every day.  It's had a trigger job, but no other work has been done on it.  She's still humming along.
