My Handi is a POS... RIGHT...!
« on: September 06, 2012, 09:23:03 AM »
Went to the range.  Got some little smiles at my gun.  Sighted in my new 4x Leupold Compact on my favorite 30-30 @ 50yds.   Out to 100yds.  Shot 5...

Held up the back of my target to a guy looking at me.  He had a VERY nice looking SS bolt gun with huge scope and a brake.  He just turned away.

I came home.

Very nice ! I have a new Handi 30-30 I have yet to shoot. It's getting it's forend pillar and glass bedded right now and when it gets back I going to put a XS Ghost Ring on it and head fro the range.

Way to go, good shootin!!  ;) I've not shot a 5-shot group with any of my 30-30 Handis, but I have shot a 3-shot group with factory 150gr Rems that was close to that, and a 3-shot group with my 30-30AI Handi that's right there with it, both with no special bedding or other work, just the normal tweaking making sure the forend fits just right, 30-30 Handis are hard to beat. 8)

I was using Winchester XX Power Point 150gr.  Figured I'd use 'regular' factory ammo to sight it in.  My hand loads are all 170gr I did for the Marlin also.  I didn't try them; quit while I was ahead...

Yeah, I guess I'm being a bit prideful.  Can't remember ever shooting this good before.  Just became my favorite rifle.  Good trigger too.  Hunt Goddess must love me.  Tomorrow I renew my license and get some more Power Points.

Oh, and I took the 45-70 yesterday, which shot OK for me.  Trigger is not as good, but the Handi-grip stock really soaks up recoil.  Maybe the thumbhole shape and better pad.

[edit]  No real mods.  I just added the Buff Carbine stock, QD rings and the Leupy scope I got local.  It's an older ejector gun I got local also awhile back.

Thanks for the cheers.  This is a fun vacation...!

[edit two]  Do you think I'm set a little high for 100yds?  Was hoping to be able to hit at 150.

"Do you think I'm set a little high for 100yds?  Was hoping to be able to hit at 150."

You look to be about 2.5" high at 100 yards... With that load a zero of 175 yards will put you 2.3" high at 100 yards, 1.3" high at 150 yards and 2" low at 200 yards... which makes it a bonified "dead-hold" deer gun from 0-200 yards (that is with a scope 1.5" over the bore)... so you might want to lower your POI a half inch at 100 yards... that is the way I would go with it anyway.

You shoulda started complaining that all the bullets didn't go into the same hole, that woulda learned him.  Great shooting!

Mine doesn't do as well but since I will probably never shoot it at anything smaller than a deer out to 200 yards, the 1.5" it shoots suits me.  I never played with loads, seating depth or anything so if how mine shoots is sub-par, its my fault.

I wouldn't change a thing. You're ready. Funny how it tickles some of us to get such good results from such under respected gear. I have a beautiful CZ 550 FS that is old school gorgeous, bluing, fit, finish. Sweet Turkish walnut full stock and 20" barrel. Shoots like you'd want it to. Saved for a year to get it. I hardly ever play with it! Always messing with either Handis or some old beater I got for $100. Go figure. Anyway, that's some hard holding there, my friend. Well done.

I see it says 95 degree on the target.
Try it again when the weather gets colder (around 25-30)and see how it does.
May do just as good or may be off some.
I am sure the POI will be down closer to POA.
Nice shooting for now.
