Cannon/Carriage Nomenclature
« on: August 21, 2012, 12:15:48 PM »
Does anyone know of a source for the technical name of the various parts of cannon and carriages, also ballistic terminology? I know a few but that's about it.

Thanks, John...... :)

Your best bet would to contact Antique Ordnance Publishers (see stickies at the top of the board) and order their Book 12 on Civil War cannons, etc.  The book details most of the popular barrels as well as all the wood (cheek stocks, trail stock, etc.) as well as all the "irons".  Of course all their names appear below their drawings.  Many of the irons are carry-overs from the Rev War so AOP's book 12 is a good place to start.
