any pet loads for the 357 handi?
« on: July 02, 2012, 11:06:10 AM »
hi guys,

Looking to just make "the load" if I can for my 357 handi, would love a starting point. I'll use whatever bullet you tell me but left to my own devices it'll be a 158 grain flatnose.

I don't need the powder you used, just the approximate speed you push them to to get prime results. Won't be taking this guy past 100 yards but if I can group well there I'd be tickled pink. Otherwise it's just 50 yards.

I have no firm idea what speed mine are, and it is irrelevant, they are fast enough. I got a good buy on 140 gr Rem, and also used 158 gr XPT . The 140 gr were best with 14 gr of 2400, the 158 with 13.6 gr. Both shoot about 1.25" at 75 yards, and both should be around 1700 fps I would guess. They have reliably killed several deer and everything else they were fired at. That is a very mid level load. I use std primers, and they work much better with a crimp, get better ignition and cleaner burn.

I was checking out some light loads for my grandson and got literally one ragged hole using 2.3 Clays with 148 g HBLWC. Plenty good enough for a 7 year old learning on targets.

best so far for me has been 158gr. JSP Sierra
                                        15.0 2400
                                        500 CCI
                                        Rem case

only used it once on a w.t. at 98+ - yds.
i've shot 'em with a .308 that didn't work as good

I'm in the middle of trying to figure to use either
the Hornady Flex or the Barnes XPB, but neither
have come up with any data to suit me, that is
to say that i'm not gonna buy another powder I
don't already use to load one specific load for
one gun. Also, the component bullets aren't
priced good enough to buy, the loaded ammo
is right with the bullets on pricing( Barnes anyway)

good luck with it.

( didn't c.graph it- haven't used it in years )
18 MINUTES.  . . . . . .
