Finally my Handi is at Hand. Nearly
« on: August 08, 2012, 11:36:07 PM »
Well the importer got 2 H&R cemtre fire rifles in 500S&W.
Don't know who grabbed the other one but One will now be mine.
The local dealer I use is a Top Bloke and he has given me all the help I needed with the paperwork.
So the government machine has been paid and in a while I will hopefully get my permission to acquire,
Only then can I pickup my new Handi.
After that the fun can begin.
What is your favourite after market stock for your handi rifle and why?

Welcome Michael,

The .500 has a goodly amount of kick and bark, and I think that would be a major consideration in stock selection.  The .500 I had was stocked with a factory synthetic.  If I had kept it, I would have put a heavier laminated set on it.  I'd say the style is up to you and would depend largely on whether or not you scoped it, and if you like thumbholes, MCs, straight stocks etc.

Good luck and good shooting.  Hope you enjoy your new rifle.  You're in a great place to use it. ;)

Congrats on the new rifle. Like Pete said the 500 can be quite a kicker with heavy loads. Keep that in mind when choosing optics or stocks. Personally I like the thumbhole laminates and a shotgun scope with lots of eye relief on the 500. If it has the plastic open sights on it you'll probably want to throw them in the garbage soon after you get it... let's just say they aren't the best sights in the world. ;)  As far as accuracy the 500 is like anything else... when you find a load it likes it'll drive tacks. I always had good luck with 370gr. hardcast in mine. It'd shoot about 2.5" groups at 100yds. which isn't bad for a pistol cartridge. (in my opinion). I won't tell you it'd shoot under an inch because it wouldn't. ;D  As far as knockdown power it'll probably take down anything on Earth with the right loads. Check out some of Tim's posts on the 500... I think he loaded up some 700gr. Ranger Rick bullets in his. :o  All things considered you should have a very good, hard hitting big game rifle.

HI,

I recently picked up a 500 S&W and decided I wanted to dedicate it to shooting relatively slow, <1300 FPS (<400 M/S ;D ), cast lead.  I already have two Handis that are bigger kickers and really don't want a third.  I installed a low comb PW shotgun stock w/o recoil pad so I am not tempted to load it hot.  I am using Unique powder and 350 grain LFN bullets that I buy at a local gun shop and last range trip shot a 3" 3 shot group @ 100 yards.  This is with open sights and sitting at a bench using my elbows as the steady rest.  The gun with this "reduced" load is very fun to shoot and one can launch 30 or 40 rounds from the bench and not be punished.    Even this slow load still has plenty of energy to punch a whole in any game that I am likely to encounter.

I hope the bureaucrats expedite your paperwork and you get to the range soon with your new rifle.

Here's a good discussion on big bullets in the 500S&W Handi. Mine has been rechambered to 499HE if you want to step up to something that really matches the biggest bullets.  ;D
