My .357 Mag!
« on: August 05, 2012, 12:14:55 PM »
Just bought a 357 mag barrel from guy. He had cut it down and threaded the barrel and put a cut down Ar flash hider on it as a thread protector.  The scope in the photo is now gone and I am trying to decide what kind of sights to put on it.

I like it.  The only thing I see wrong, is that the thread protector is a flash suppressor, instead of a more graceful can-shaped muzzle balancing device.  So, thinking about suppressing it on down the road?  How long is the barrel?  I'm assuming 16"ish?  Hope it shoots as good as it looks.

How long did he thread it?  Flash hider go all the way on? 1/2x28 by .400ish would be nice for some quietness.  ;D  but you can use spacer if cut AR .  Figure $70 to thread so if you get a good deal on the barrel and good threading , you doing good.

Well I just found my way back here and remembered where I posted this. I thought I replied to the other short barrel 357 thread instead of posting my own. At least that was my intent.

I took the scope off and took another look at the flash hider. It looks as if it is not threaded on after all. I called the guy and he said that it is permanently silver soldered on and that the barrel was turned down so it would be flush with the outside of the barrel. It serves as a crown/muzzle protector. The length of the barrel with the protector is just a hair over 16" and it extends about 1/2" beyond the end of the barrel.

So the barrel is legal length with protector and is pretty short overall.  Still trying to decide what sights to put on it.

Well probably because it's still a functional piece and doesn't really scream, "Hey I don't have it attached, but I have a silencer!"  lol

Sounds like you can't take off the flash hider and thread it for a can or you'll have a SBR.

Yeah that kind of sucks but on the other hand, this is my first H&R Topper and first rifle barrel. I only have $57 total in this gun.  The shotgun w/o buttstock was $17 at a garage sale, the buttstock and barrel w/rings and scope was $30 and I fitted it myself.  I am not so sad  ;D
