new s&w 60 3"
« on: November 21, 2011, 05:02:57 PM »
Thinking about getting one of these. How do current owners feel about them? Trigger decent? I have serious doubts about whether or not the can tolerate 357 which is fine cause I'll be using 38's in it. I basically need a do a bit of everything gun. CCW, trail gun, home defence. Basically comes down to that or a 3 inch sp101. I like the sights better on the smith and the strength and price tag on the ruger. Well anyway do those of you out there with them like em?

Hate the Ruger, love the S&W.

I got one not long after they came out with them in .38 special only and then traded it on the .357 Magnum version as soon as it hit the market. I have a CTC laser grip on mine and can shoot smaller groups with the laser than the sights but both are very useable.

I've been carrying it for years and it's on the bed every night. They are as accurate as you can see the sights and trigger is typical S&W meaning it needs nothing done to it right out of the box. I've owned well over a hundred S&W revolvers and the only one that ever needed work was one that for some reason the trigger just got too light on. I think I had bought it used and most likely someone had done some home gunsmithing on it.

I have had several S&Ws and a few Rugers.  All the Rugers have gone to live with others and the S&Ws have stayed with me.  The two M36s, (2" and 3"), I had were both 38 Special and I used them in PPC competition.  Accurate to 50 yards and then some.

If you are looking for a do all handgun, consider a K frame S&W.  Reasonable prices, great quality and they work forever.  Anything bigger may be too heavy, but either the J or K frame is an easily carried package.

I have a 3" M60 in 357mag.  I've changed the grip to a packmayer rubber boot grip and use 125gr hps..brand really doesn't matter in the 357 IMHO.  I practice with 38spec generally and don't worry about recoil...if I had to use it, I suspect I'd not notice it...at least this is what happens with my heavy 40 cal+ kickers with hunting loads.

I just picked up a Model 60 Pro a couple of weeks ago.  Absolutely love it.  Easy to carry, and very accurate with the .38 +P that I'm shooting out of it.

Got 2 of them in .357-3", and I love them when shooting .38s. They tend to bite with the .357's so bad my wife wont shoot them, so we keep them loaded with Hornady 110gr personal defence ammo. One stays in the truck and one stays on my wifes night stand at all times. I save the .357 for my S&W 686 performance center-5" shoots great.

I've packed a M60 in .38 since 1978 and about 5 yrs. ago got a 3" M60 in .357, it's my favorite packing gun or trail gun.  I shoot 185 gr. flat pt. gas checks at 950 fps. very accurate. I recently picked up a M60 in 5" .357, thinking it would be even better than the 3" but so far I still like the 3" better.

3" M60 is a do everything revolver.  Home defense, target practice, concealed carry, or trail gun.
Mine is a 60-4 .38 Special from the early 90s.  I like the full-length extractor rod and the full underlug.
Just as accurate as my 4" K-frame.  It is wearing M60 pro Series grips.

Hey Gray!  That's exactly how I bought mine...someone didn't want the wood Pro grip so the shop changed it out for a hogue...I came along and liked the wood grip better and home it came!

WISH I would have scored the 3"  38 that I had a chance to play with some 20yrs ago, but I was into 44Spl then. Our 442 S&W Airweight is sweet (dbl act only) but I would have liked to compare it to that old Mdl 60.

The model 60 smith 2" barrel was my wifes first protection handgun. She loves it fits in her purse or sits in her office at easy access , after I shot it I'd like to buy a second one for me. Great little handgun two thumbs up.

I would take the S&W over the SP101.  I love mine in .38 ( I better, as I traded a used Diamondback for it before the Colts were worth their weight in gold).

I've had an older model 60 for years (38 spl) 2".  Wanted more power so got a Ruger SP 101 .357 with 3" bbl.  At first liked it ,but the action and sights were not the same standards as S&W's.  Then bought a used S&W 60-4 38 Spl with 3" bbl.  Liked it very much as a woods walking gun, but still was looking for more power, not that I really needed more power," just in case" I wanted it.  Finally, I purchased a S&W model 65 .357 mag with 3" bbl and round butt (and six shots!!!) and this gun meets all my requirements.  Reasonably light, compact, plenty of power if needed, and as stated six shots.  This is my complete "all around"gun for my purposes.  I don't use many full power .357's, mostly wadcutter 38's, +P 38's and some mild .357's.  A great great gun. But I still have my original model 60 - it's not going anywhere!

The 3" .357 Model 60 I have is my most used gun. It's versatile. You can load up some stout Buffaloe Bore type loads for protection from large meat eaters. I wouldn't shoot them for fun, but you can carry them if you needed too. Might not 'stop' a bear, but at least he'll end up dead too. Then there's everything else on down to super light .38 Sp. loads. Accuracy of my gun is amazing off sand bags. I love my K frames but the 60 gets carried.

I've owned both the 3" model 60 and SP101.  While the Ruger seems to be stouter, it simply doesn't favorably compare to the model 60 in my experience.  The Ruger didn't stay in my house very long.  I have no regrets about it's departure.  The model 60?  It was a fixed sighted ladysmith .38.  Like an idiot I sold it to a friend that wanted it for his wife as a house gun.  I should have told him to hunt his own.  Now I'm about to buy another but this time it'll be the same gun that Gray Paw has teased us with.
