Looking at a Savage Axis and would like your opinion.

Got a price of $374.50 out the door on a left hand Savage Axis in .223/5.56 at a LGS. I saw a right hand Savage Axis in .223/5.56 in walmart for 298.00 plus tax plus 50.00 BG check fee even though I have a carry permit that exempts me from the BG check. 
I know it doesn't compare with a the custom guns and that's not what I am looking for.  I hate the term "truck gun" (why don't we just say cheap) or a knock-about for when I run across a crow or hog or coyote and a young buck or doe once in a while (during season, of course).
I just wondering if the price $374.50 total is a fair price for the LH Axis?  By the way I am left handed. left dominant eye.

I bought my .223 at Academy Sports on sale for $249.00, without scope in right hand.  It is very accurate out of the box.  The only thing I tinkered with was polishing the trigger group and applying gun slick grease.
 
Good value for the money.
 
I would compare prices.  A local dealer will sell me one with a scope for $299.00.  I plan to buy another in 243.

before you jump, take a look at the marlin X series guns. i got mine for 329.00 with the nice trigger.

I have an axis in 7-08.  The heavy trigger is an easy fix.  I fixed mine in about 10 minutes including take down and reassembly.  It shot moa before the trigger repair.  It now breaks clean at 2.5 pounds.  Google the fix and do not look back.

my 243 axis shoots great as does my xl7 marlin .270. I had the 243 marlin and couldnt get it to shoot 100 grain bullets good with the 10 twist. then i got the savage with the 9 1/4 twist and it shoots any 100 grain factory ammo good and my reloads even better. the only down fall is the stock and the lack of boyds making a wood replacement. so if you just want a gun to keep it the way it is get the axis. if you like to customize go with the x guns or a 110/111 savage. that price does seem a bit high. i paid 269 new for my 243.

I have an Axis in 223 sub moa just installed an accutrigger in it looking at 1/2 maybe good value I think.

I think the price of $374.50 is way high.  I have also read more positive reviews than negative about the Axis, the trigger being the major complaint. For under $300.00 bucks, it would be worth installing an adjustable trigger.  Of course I expect to pay a little more for a left hand model.

I picked one up used at a gun show last year because the price was right and I`m a Savage fan. The trigger really was bad, but when I took the action out of the stock I was really shocked. It has the old stile Savage trigger, but with no adjustment screw and just a heavy spring. Easy fix, just get a set screw and a liter spring, or cut some off the one that is there. The real schoker was the it did not have a recoil lug, or at least what I we are used to. They have milled a key slot in the frount of the action and molded a coin like recoil lug into the stock. I was not impressed by what they did and would much prefer the recoil lug on the barreled action. When I took it out to try I was very pleased with the accuracy. I grabbed some ammo I had loaded for a different gun, 55 gr Nosler bullets and H-380 powder and it shot abt 1/2 moa which I consider good enough for a varmint rifle. The stock is plastic, but good and solid. Not and action I would want to build a rifle on, but if your looking for a good cheap rifle to hunt with, it will make an excellant carry gun as the weight is lite enough and the accuracy is very good. At least in the one I have.

Mine is in 308 Win and instead of messing with the factory trigger I bought a basix replacement. I'm happy with it. The barrel is being shortened to carbine length.

Dixijack,  your Wal-Mart has a $50 fee for a background check when buying a firearm?  Never have paid for a BG check here, including at my local Wal-Mart.

Interesting price at your Wal-Mart. Up here I can get the same rifle with a (cheap) scope for exactly the same price in Canadian $. We don't have a background check.
 
The only rifle cheaper is the Mossberg.

It's doesn't seem to be a corporate policy.  Standard BG fee is $25.00 most everywhere in Georgia unless you have a carry permit and then it is free.  You still have to fill out paperwork, but it's a different form than the one  that has to be filled out if you done have a permit. 
I checked a couple of other dealers in my ramblings and all are within the $375.00 range for an Axis in .223 with a left hand bolt.
