I was more into taking handguns to hunt with when I packed in from mid 60's. But over the years when I did want a rifle instead... for rimfire pack "carbines" I always took one of my Winchester 1890's or 1906's, or one of my Browning SAR's. For centerfire carbines mostly a Contender with a match the task cartridge or two in short barrels or if I wanted a 410 shotgun along, a custom Remy 600 Vent Rib Bullpup 308 sometimes that was a dream to shoot in the thick stuff, or one of my Remy XP-100 or Wichita specialty pistols that would shoot as far more accurately than rifles.
I also had a back pack that had provisions for a full sized rifle, shotgun or bow to take whatever I wanted. But it was more cumbersome than my most used packs, so I didn't use it as much.
