when you shoot your postal match targets
« on: February 13, 2004, 04:41:13 AM »
these are things you should do when shooting for small groups with a handi rifle

1. add weight to your rifle.i add the steel bar from the but stock of my nef 10ga turkey gun

2.make sure things are tight.scope bases and rings exct.

3.good solid rest.bench,sand bags exct.

4.take your hammer extention off.less weight on your hammer means faster lock time.

5.use good ammo.factory ammo or handloads.no cheap import stuff

6.shoot a fouling shot.cleans the oil out of your barrel

7.shoot slow and i mean slow.the handi rifles shoot the best with a cool barrel.take two rifles to the range to shoot.let your handi rifle set there and cool.i go for a group with the first 10 or 12 shots i shoot

8.make sure your scope is parallax free.if you have parallax in your scope its hard to shoot real small groups.if you have parallax make sure you place your cheek on the stock the same way everytime.

9.dont hold the forarm down or touch the barrel when you shoot off the bench.just let the gun lay there on the bag or rest the same way everytime

10.try to grip the stock the same way everytime

11.squeeze the trigger off real nice.

12.try to have the same sight picture everytime in your scope.same point of aim.i try to have my group above my point of aim

13.shoot when there is little or no wind

if i think of anyting else i will add to this.

another thing dont worry about anyone else and how there targets look.i know everyone thinks i will win again and i am going to try,but that shouldnt stop you from shooting.go have some fun, after all this is just a fun match shot with hunting guns

Jeff,
Sounds good to me. I'm getting pysched for it. Win or lose, it should be fun, and great practice for the spring groundhogs.

Well said jeff223, I think that if more people woud follow those cues, there would be far fewer complaints about Handi rifles not shooting. I've been shooting these guns since the first Model 158 30-30 I bought in the winter of 1984. I've had lousy triggers and  lousy sights, but every one I have had was capable of shooting well. I can't say every one would shoot under an inch, but I have not seen one that wouldn't shoot with most any other factory hunting rifle out there.

I probably shouldn't give away any secrets, but I thought this might help.

If you're like me and don't like shooting at an 'X' at 100 yards and have a favorite target (mine being a 10 ring with 1" BLACK bull) tape your 3x5 card to the back of you favorite target, then shoot your favorite target, then pull the 3x5 postal card off the back of the target and send it in.

Hope this helps.

There are going to be a lot of good shooter and some good guns. Every little advantage you have is a added bonus. Of coarse we are just doing this for fun.  :-D Maybe after we do this one we shoud do something with shotguns at 30 yards using 6 shot.
