30.06 110 grain V-Max?
« on: August 18, 2012, 02:54:57 PM »
Ok men, after having purchased a 30.06 barrel from Longtom (thanks by the way, Good barrel) I am thinking of using the 110 grain V-max for varmints / coyotes instead of my .223. Making the '06 my all around gun.(Noooo, I'm not forgetting my 45 / 70...Geeze)
Now, I understand all barrels are individual...bla, bla...But has anyone had luck with a 1 in 10 twist 30 cal barrel and light varmint bullet combos?

I made some up for the same reason, using H380; shot about 1" 3-shot groups., not as good as 180's in my 30-06 (not a handi, but a long throated single shot nonetheless.)
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

I had some 110gr HP's I loaded up with a heavy charge of H4350 and shot them out of my 16.75" 30-06 just for grins.....I wanted a loud flame thrower, which I got but it also shot very well.  One of my buddies and I were busting basketball sized rocks at 200 yards with it off hand....no bad considering I have a 2x pistol scope on it.

I regularly shoot 125gr Speer TNTs in my Handi 30-06, and they do well.  I don't shoot for measured groups, I shoot to hit a 6" target at 400 to 500 yards.

I have a bunch of 110gr Speer Varminter bullets loaded using 55gr Winchester 760.  Just have not taken them to the range yet.  Can't carry them till after snow flies anyway.  I used these bullets in my .308 back many years ago.  They did not shoot well in my Parker Haile .308.  I founs that box on the shelf and loaded them just to see how they will shoot in the Handi.  As you can tell I'm not real excited about these light bullets in a 30-06, not expecting much, but I'll see once I take them to the range.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

You're right about it being different from rifle to rifle.  My '06 and .308 both shoot the Speer .110 grain varmint bullet well but the same loads were unimpressive in a friend's rifle.

shot some 110 gr spfb about 30 years ago. 3 shots would be good and the 4th a flyier. Never worked on the load just hauled a few around to shoot a long way at cayotes and such. I think with work it might have been exceptional. Remington 700.  ear
