8mm Mauser Handi ?
« on: August 16, 2012, 01:03:49 AM »
Curious, has anyone ever tried an 8mm Mauser Handi conversion ? I have a couple old Mausers, lots of ammo.... What would be a good donor barrel ?   308 ?

8mm is 7.92 not 7.62, so you would have to get a different barrel source.  I'm thinking the .32-20's Larry did for guys here were from a .303 brit barrel, but not sure.  Maybe he'll chime in.  ;)

Likely have to be a rebore or do it as a stub project as the 8x57 bullet diameter is .323 in.  I think the closest Handi would be the 7.62x39 whose bullet is .311/.312 in. vs. .308 in for regular "30 caliber."  Ruger apparently uses .308 barrels for the 7.62x39 in the Mini-30 which is .003 - .004 undersize, but in 8x57 would be .011 undersize.  Not to mention, 7.62x39 barrels are no longer made by H&R and sell at a premium.
If you want a reasonable barrel for a stub project, Wideners has new replacement 8x57 barrels for the Yugo M48 at $55!

Yah, stubbing a regular mauser barrel would be the wise route, albeit you'd have to cut back the barrel and re-chamber also I think to get a good stub.  The Sportsmansguide has mauser barrels on occasion also.  ;)

Numrich has a bunch of 8mm barrels from $25 up. Personally, if I wanted something different, I'd spend my $250-$350 rebore/stub money for something a bit more desirable that I didn't already have a rifle chambered in, that's a lot of money to just shoot the ammo you already have.... but different strokes......  ;)

If it was offered, a 8x57R would be interesting, but then every caliberr is interesting in some way.  A .308 has less body taper, so a 8x57 chamber may not clean up right.  :You would have to rebore and rechamber something like a .223 barrel, or do the stub route.  From the standpoint of the bean counters, all "needs" are covered by .223, .243, 7-08, .308,(and or);  30-06, and 45-70 .22, and .357.

I do wish there were more offerings in bottle necks over .30.

And while we are wishing for improbable chamberings:  .33 WCF, .348 Win., and for real, .338 Federal.  Given enough time and money, I would have a handi in every one of the .308 family, every 30-06 family, the Mauser family (.257 Roberts), and all the 45-70 based brass.
just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not watching you

Not sure but I don't think a rebore from a .308 to .323 would clean the existing 308 lands and grooves to well.

Thanks for the input guys. I know a local gunsmith that has a some Mauser parts, Turk barrels, etc. Might pay him a visit, and see if he can stub one up for me. As far as "need",  8mm doesnt fill a niche, but thought it would be interesting.

It is interesting. Great cartridge. 'Need' is a dirty word. Be sure to post any progress if you decide to go for it.
