Woman found murdered two days after calling 911 for help The Lookout - 6 hours ago

Police in Dallas are conducting an internal investigation after discovering that a 32-year-old woman who was found murdered on Sunday had called 911 two days before.

The woman, Deanna (Cook) Patrick, was "found deceased in the bathtub of her residence," police said. Delvecchio Patrick, her 35-year-old ex-husband, was arrested and charged with murder.

The department "is currently conducting a comprehensive review of an August 17, 2012 911 call from the victim," the Dallas Police Department wrote on its Facebook page on Monday:

The Department's preliminary review has determined that the 911 call originated from a cell phone. As a result, the 911 call-taker did not know the exact address of the caller. The 911 call taker attempted to obtain the address from the caller, while simultaneously conducting a search of previous calls from the same cell phone number to determine an associated address. The call taker also notified the 911 on-duty supervisor of the ongoing issue. The call was forwarded to the dispatcher but could not be dispatched to field officers until an address was determined. Once the address was confirmed, the 911 call taker updated the call information so the call could be dispatched. The process of obtaining the address and updating the call information took approximately 9 minutes.

Once obtaining an address, the dispatcher gave the call to the first available police field element. The officers that received the call arrived at the location and knocked at the door. When no one answered, they requested a call-back of the caller which went to voicemail. They also checked the perimeter windows of the home and spoke with neighbors who reported that they had not heard any disturbance.

The Department is seeking to determine if the nature of the call was sufficiently communicated through each step of the process to the responding officers and the appropriateness of their response based on the information provided.

Dallas police did not release the contents of the 911 call, saying it could interfere with the ongoing investigation. But according to The Dallas Morning News' crime blog, Patrick called 911 to report her husband was attacking her:

According to police records, Deanna Cook called 911 about 10:54 a.m. Friday. She could be heard screaming for her ex-husband to stop attacking her. "Delvecchio, why are you doing this?" Cook yelled, according to police records.

"Red, please stop, I didn't do anything to you," she said, referring to him by his nickname. ...

Two days later, as Cook's family grew concerned about her well-being, they went to the home and found her dead.

Delvecchio Patrick, the blog noted, "has a history of alleged domestic violence against his wife, Dallas County court records show."

Patrick's bail was set at $500,000. He is currently being held in the Dallas County Jail.

Damn shame all around.

I find it hard to blame the officers involved. At first blush it seems they did the best with what they had to work with. Blame the operators? No not really, again, it sounds like they were doing the best they could under the circumstances.

The dirtbag who killed this lady is to be blamed 100%. Truth is she was likely dead moments after the phone call. A gun in this gals fist may not have changed the outcome but it certainly would not have ended any worse.

I can see why people are outraged at the two day lapse. Is it the responsability of LE to follow up? Is it The 911 call center who should have followed up? Does every call warrant a follow up? Once again proves the point that ultimately you are the only one you can trust to your own security.

I have a certain amount of faith in the police, but when it comes to protecting me and my family, I have way more faith in my 9mm, shotgun and a Boxer that thinks strangers are chew toys!

I don't know a lot about how cell phones interact with 911. I know that the ones I have had, had a feature where you can turn 911 location on and off. My assumption is it calls 911 in the area where the nearest tower is? Locally there was a woman being raped who called 911 during the attack. She gave an address but the call went to the wrong county. They didn't have that address. After he left she was able to call with a home phone and it went to the proper county. 2 years later the same thing happened to the same woman. Both counties sent patrol cars to her address and they caught the guy. There wasn't much the first county could do the first time. They were still searching similar road names and addresses a few hours later, when they were notified that it wasn't their county she was in. After that day, the sheriff had them cross reference every 911 cell phone call with the neighboring county and call their dispatch just in case. Then call them back stating their officer had arrived on scene to cancel the co-op.

Like someone said, "when seconds count, police are only minutes away".  Get a gun, learn how to use it.

I'm baffled how people in other countries manage to survive without surrounding themselves with "heat" :-\ :-\

Engage in hyperbole if you wish BBF, but you know very well that there are victims in those countries who at the moment of their demise at the hands of the bad guy were probably wishing they had some of that "heat".

They don't.  The FBI says they have records that over 2 million people per year defend themselves successfully and legally in the U.S with "heat"...and that is only what is on record.  A lot is not on record.
I would think if people in another country were not allowed to have "heat"...those numbers would be very low.  I personally won't go anywhere without "heat"...it helped me out once.  I would not live in a place where only the government decides who has "heat" and then watch the government be the only ones with "heat".  I guess in those places it must be bred into people to accept this.

Ya have to wonder where the logic is in not being allowed to have a gun, but then they give you a phone number to call and send someone with a gun. Seems it would be a whole lot easier to already have the gun there and not wait for a car to bring you one.  ;D  Never could figure out that logic of dialing a phone number to get a gun.  Dial  911..."please send someone with a gun".  ::)
