Has anyone added a nodakspud rear sight for their h&r shotgun
« on: August 26, 2012, 02:25:05 PM »
I couldn't find any posts on this website about them. I am thinking of ordering one to put on my smoothbore shotgun for slugs

Anyone have any experience with them

Dang, I was hoping someone would have replied as I'm interested as well.

Hi,

The pic on their website has the nodaksupud rear sight installed in the rear two scope base holes on the chamber swell.  I think all or most of the smoothbore H&R shotgun barrels will require a D/T to install this sight.  The chamber swell on a 20 ga barrel is thick enough to D/T but on a 12 ga barrel you have to drill completely though the chamber swell to tap for screws, which may not be a good idea although folks have posted in the past that they have done this.

"Can be soldered to shotgun barrels without drill tap."

I believe that one of the members here is making those, that there was a discussion of them in the rifles forum a while back.

FWIW, my H&R 'Buck barrel, a smooth 12ga., has open sights. It shoots slugs to them quite well and, surprise to me, snap shooting with shot goes pretty much where Im looking. The front sight is not just a bead, but a tallish blade. It works so well I havent put the old bird barrel back on, its my 'all rounder' as is.
Even so, each barrel is its own self, so yours may not do as well for you. I would have tried the peep myself if it was already D/T'ed. You could anneal a piece of hacksaw blade and use the hole for the peep, put a bend in it and epoxy it on to try out the idea.

You don't even need to use epoxy, Loctite Black Max will hold it on well enough if the piece is contoured to the barrel, I Black Maxed a WGRS on my M1908 temporarily for locating the mounting hole, it took a couple good whacks with a hammer and block of wood to knock it off, it's used for mounting sights, barrel bands, ribs and such.
