I really should know this, but what's the purpose of the national conventions for democrat and republican? Is it solely to name their candidate for presidency (my longstanding assumption) or is there more to it than that?

I forgot about the platform part. Well, now I can shut off all news and radio for the next couple of weeks because I just don't want to hear about what they're actually doing.

Its also about free air time, cheerleading, and stroking the donors.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Stroking each other on the airways and lying about what they plan to do if elected.

I tend to believe more of that. Or maybe talking about how they have all the voters buffaloed, through years of buffaloing.

I wonder why they would schedule their convention in Florida during hurricane season?

 Seriously?

I believe the various committees get together to formulate the platform.. then delegates get to know one-anotherso they can better coordinate for the drive toward election day.
It is the best way of gaining attention for their candidates and introduce them to the public.  A great chance to get the message out!
Suppose either the Dems or Reps skipped the process..what would be the likely result for them?  Some institutions are in place and nobody can see a way out of them..if they even want to!
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)
