power point of civil war photos

Hi, I have a power point show of stills from the civil war.  War footage, Cannons, cannon balls, camps, music from Good, Bad and Ugly.  I have a friend posting them so as soon as he posts them they will be on this post.  I really like it.  After looking I have a question.  What is the one hole in the cannon ball for?  Hope everyone likes them as I do.

I'm just guessing because I can't see it yet, but that's probably a shell, and the hole is where the fuze is inserted.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Cannoneer take a look at the pics of the cannon balls you can see the hole in the ball .Looks to big for a fuse.Let me know what you think.
 
Everyone else hope you enjoy the photos,blown up cannons stacks of cannon balls ,hard times ,hard lives to live comparied to today.We do not have it bad,think about it.one thumb short

Um...you have over a hundred photo links with no descriptions, can you give us a hint please?

Check here:  http://www.civilwarartillery.com/  and look at the left sidebar, "Fuzes - quick ID" for an example of what the fuze adapters looked like.  Wasn't just a 1/8 inch diameter fuse stuck in.

#66 is interesting. Water crossing on a makeshift raft make of planks & what looks like torpedos or whatever. Thanks for posting the collection.

The page you tried to access does not exist on this server.

My apologies; the suffix was typed in upper case while the actual file name was lower case (Unix server.)  It should work now.

Thanks for fixing that.  I clicked through it very quickly.  GREAT set of photos.  If you can, please add in captions?  I would love to know what some of those are.

Interesting group of photos.  I think the holes referred to can best be seen in these three:

They look like fuse holes to me.

Thanks for posting the pictures, one thumb short; as some others have already said, there are more than a few that I hadn't seen before.



Photo from "The Civil War Relicman", Harry Ridgeway. "Ball, shell, thin walled mortar with lifting ears, wood fuse with 1.75in. opening, smoothbore mortar, 10in."


The large hole is for a fuse, and the two smaller holes (ears) are where the points of a lifting tool are inserted, so the shell can be more easily lifted and loaded into the bore of a mortar, or cannon.

I also think that subdjoe offered up a very good suggestion: If you have any information (who, what, when, where, and why) on any photos that you're posting, it's always a good idea to include it with the picture. I know that in this instance it may not have been possible to do that, but as you get more proficient at posting pics, it's a good habit to get into.

Interesting is an understatement; this may be the very first photo ever taken of the granddaddy of all "Patrol Torpedo Boats." If McHale had been the captain of this one he probably wouldn't have been so danged fat. I've never seen this photo before, at first I thought it was a spoof.

Subjoe gunney fixed the power point.The power point waas in and e-mail  senr to me as you can see it is spainish made about CW.It had music from good bad and ugly with it.No id on pictures so we are all out of luck ,some look like they have already ided pics from seeing them before,some I have seen some not.I just wanted to post so everyone could enjoy and thanks for gunney for helping me.one thumb short

My guess is that all these photos come from the National Archives.  They have huge numbers of them, some with useful captions, some just stating the obvious.
