Does anyone out there shoot a 40. I've got a bee in my bonnet about  trying to find one in flint. Any recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Crunch

Hell yes!
I built an Isaac Haines a year ago.
It has a Colerain barrel of 38 inches swamped set in a premium maple stock with brass trimmings and deluxe Siler large lock.
Shoots like a dream.  On a calm day it will keep 5 shots inside 2 inches at 100 metres.
I chose the .40cal round ball for a few reasons.
  a) I shoot out to 100m on targets so wanted something that would shoot well but not leap around; thought sub .40 might not have the legs for 100m work.
  b) I hunt only small game eg: rabbits, hares (jack rabbits to you) and wallabies (small kangaroos) so don't need a large bore.
  c) I am mean with money and the .40cal is damned cheap to run with the balls weighing only 93gr and a close range target load of 30gr and 100m load of 50gr of 3Fg makes a pound go a long way.
For what I do it serves well and I have a Wesson style percussion that was formerly .50cal that is now wearing a Colerain .40cal tube too.

I got a .40 cal. barrel from Dixie and modified it to fit my Lyman GPR flint.  Very cheap to shoot and great for squirrels.  Also it seemed like all of the really serious shooters at the last interstate flintlock match that I went to were shooting 40s.  A real nice compromise between big heavy calibers and finicky little calibers.

:D  Also a 6 cavity round ball mould I asked Jeff Tanner to make for me.Man,it's the second best caliber going-the first being the .54,but only if you run into bear or elk!

Crunch, I have 3 .40's (2 nipples,1 flint) aside from the .38 of which is my favorite the .40's are a great bore size for just about anything. The most accurate is a Hawken (repro) that had a rusted out bore and I found that a friend had 3 old Douglas barrels in 1 inch .40. We traded around and that gun can shoot circles around anything out there. The flinter in .40 takes a bit too get used to. It is only a 13/16's barrel and sort of light for real accurate shooting. The other is a sort of southern mountain style and is a nipple gun. It is also quite accruate and a joy to shoot. My sister wants me to shorten the stock and remember her on her birthday. Go for the .40 you will not be sorry. Tryit.
