Good idea, ought to work great for you.
I first made working "barrel stands" for my Contender's 40 odd years ago following the KISS principle. Used them for most anything I ever had to do to my barrels, but the first idea was for working on sights, installing bases and rings, lapping rings, including drill and tap for new mounting holes. They also became my cleaning stations for after shooting, so i kept them compact to take along to the range/on hunts. Never bothered with any for frames though, never felt a need.
When the Encore came out and I got one the first with 4 barrels, the need for a barrel stand for it lead to my making two new ones... one for it and a new one for the Contenders while I was at it. Had some hard maple on hand, a few passes each with my radial arm saw, a few on the drill press for counter sunk assembly screws, one for a dowel that locked a barrel in solid, and I was set. For carbine barrels I clamped it in my bench vise, or placed a support block under the muzzle.
