8x57 barrel guestion
« on: October 11, 2012, 02:33:01 PM »
I was thinking of having an 8x57 Mauser done for my H&R.
I've got lots of ammo that needs shooting.
My question is has anybody done it with a surplus Mauser barrel and does it cut good in the lathe ?
Thanks
Dagalee

The barrels will cut just fine, you will need to cut off the extractor cut and then stub it into a H&R barrel of some type.  My favorite to use is a 20 gauge, it has enough metal to work with and not as much as a 410 does.  Then just recut the chamber and things should be good if you started with a good barrel.  Larry

Don't know if you have a barrel already, but in case you need one I saw these pretty cheap.  ;)

Thanks Tacklebury
Shipping would be too much for one barrel - better get two .
will have to check to see what other calibers they have

The problem you will have stubbing those in is that the barrel diameter gets so small just in front of the chamber that there is no way to machine a shoulder on it to install in the stub.  If you turn it down so there is a shoulder then the chamber wall thickness is not enough.  I did do one once by cutting threads on the barrel portion and putting a nut on from the muzzel end to act as a shoulder, then I machined off the threads that were in front of the nut.  Larry
