Armorers tool?
« on: October 17, 2012, 04:03:55 PM »
So I have the AR, and yeah you just cant leave em alone. I did the trigger work myself which turned out very well as far as I am concerned. Now I am thinking that a free float tube would sure be nice , and maybe get my groups down to less than the 3/4" its shooting now. So my question is about the AR tool that I've seen in the catalouges they send to my house. Any recommendations? I might even get into this even further. Improving something is fun. I look forward to your opinions.

wow. 3/4" groups from a stock top end!  A free float tube should really do the trick!!

I purchased a barrel wrench at a gun show for about $30 that works great. However, you'll also need some sort of holding jig for.the upper reciever. I got one of the thick plastic ones with pins from some company (I don't remember) for $20. You will also need a big bench vice to hold the upper and jig while you crank on the barrel nut. I have used a couple of big c-clamps with a "clam shell" style holding jig.

If you're rifle is shooting 3/4" groups now, I doubt that you'll see $200 worth of difference that it will cost for all the stuff you'll need to change it to a free float tube. However if you plan to build a couple of more AR's it might be worth it to get all the tools you need.
