Right on John!! I'm fortunate to have the same view right in my back yard from my kitchen window, no feeder necessary, just an apple and pear tree plus the wife's roses, in the winter they hoover up the millet from the bird feeder too tho!! ;D

These aren't hand fed, not by us anyway, they keep their distance if we go out the back door, but they don't go far, other day I chased a doe off the roses again, she went down to the foot of the yard and took a nap in her favorite spot!  ::)  ;D

I have watched the fawns drop in April and May. My camera traps have been out all summer. But I got my first fawn pics last week...

Same time I saw my first hard horned deer!!  ;)

Notice the times, its the same deer.  ;)

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Best I can do is use an airgun or live trap on unwanted visitors since I live in the city limits, mostly possum. Had a porkypine in the yard once, I caught him in the salmon net and lifted him over the fence so he could be on his way! 8)

What's up with all the spotted fawns in September??? The fawns are all big around here... haven't seen spots in a month and a half... could be that they mature and drop quicker due to our winters?

My fawn pic was taken Aug 9th, it's pretty much lost its spots now, comes in just about every day with mom and an aunt, once in a while dad shows up too.

The spots go with the winter coat... I had bucks getting that coat last month and other bucks just getting it now...
If you look close, the doe, in my pics is just about half way into her winter coat. ;)

Also you have the variable of deer dropping fawns in April, May and June. ;)

Our does drop fawns in early April... occasionally a yearling fawn will be bred late and drop in May, but there are not many of those.

I need to put a trail cam on my front porch to catch the deer that's been eating my impatiens.

Sadly, I'm finding  the remains of fawns around here, and very few tracks.  We've developed an abundance of coyotes, and they've learned to hunt deer.  I will spend a good part of my deer season with the 17 HMR coyote hunting.

Ben

Sadly we had the same problem last season.
I only saw one young deer the entire last 1/4 of the year.
The yotes were killing the fawns as fast as they hit the ground.
My hunting buddy and my self did our part with them all season long.
Between us we got eleven of them.
I just got one last week while brushhogging the fields.
Haven't seen many little ones this year either but more than last year.
We will be watching for them again this year and hopefully take out some more.

A few years ago here in VA the state game department brought in some yotes to help controll the deer.
Now they are everywhere killing the small game, killing foxes and the young deer along with young farm animals.
Now I hear they are bringing in wolves to controll the yotes.
When will man ever learn to leave things alone!
Mother nature will take care of its self without any help from man.
Looks like we may be taking wolves out one day.
What will they bring in next?

The best way to mess anything up is to let the government get involved!!!

Those are all neat pics ;)   I have deer in the Alfalfa, the field closest to the house, almost every morning and evening.  They get used to the household routine and farm chores.  When we go out, they just pick up their heads, take a look, and go back to grazing.  The dogs are trained to leave them alone, and the deer seem to know it.  It's pretty easy to convince the dogs the deer are just some more livestock.  Earlier this summer, I had a pair of Sandhill Cranes with a baby and a doe and a fawn about a hundred yards off the porch.  The fawn kept frisking around the cranes trying to get them to play.  The senior cranes just extended their wings and made false charges at the little guy.  It was comical to watch.

So far, Patty's flowers have been safe.  I've got about a dozen apple trees around the house which seems to keep them content.  I'm pretty sure if one went after her precious plants, he'd find himself in the freezer.

I've seen barely discernible spots on fawns as late as the Nov 15 - 30 deer season, but that is unusual.

I had two groups of 6 each of mule deer behind the cabin last week, can only harvest one this year in that area.  Had the resident elk herd of over 300 move across the road onto my land and wake me up at 12:30 AM, but for the 4th year in a row I didn't get a permit for an elk there.  Still magnificent to see.  DP

CW,

That buck looks to have polished his antlers already!  Isn't that a might early?  I haven't seen any buck rubs down here yet, need to get out in the woods and look some more.

CW,

That buck looks to have polished his antlers already!  Isn't that a might early?  I haven't seen any buck rubs down here yet, need to get out in the woods and look some more.

Hello WH,
Seems early to me too, but thinking back its about right. Our Archery season opens up on the 15th and generally speaking most deer are hard horned by then.
BUT this is my first ever picture of one just after it rubbed! You can tell because the horns are red with blood!

This guy (the deer) has a twin brother. I have pics of them all summer growing up. One has a bent G2  and his right brow tine, at the tip and one dosen't. The one that dosen't is hard horned the brother is still in velvet. Here is a pic of both together.

Here is a pic of the bent G2 brother form late last month.
