Captured Spanish Cannon at Nearby Library
« on: September 05, 2012, 05:22:57 AM »
Have attached a few pics of a cannon we passed on the way to Letchworth Park (Upstate NY) yesterday. I’m sure we have been by many times (it is in the small town of Livonia – in front of their library) but this is the first I noticed it. The cannon is dated 1799 and I would guess about 16' in length.

Best regards!

Well by the Cypher it was cast during the reign of Carlos the 4th there should be a banner near the muzzel with the cannon's name or dedication..... the trunnions may have the weight and where cast could you give us a written copy of the info on the base ring/breech ?  it's hard to make out in the photo...
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

Here's some info at a link on the SARA site, Spanish Artillery Research Associates.  Some of the info is accurate.

I can tell by the shape of the gun that it was made at the Manila Foundry.  The pattern of these Manila-cast guns is similar to those of the same caliber made at either of the Spanish royal foundries in Spain, but with noticeable differences in the dolphins and muzzle, and perhaps other minor differences.  Name is San Joseph (St. Joseph.)

Great info! I know the cannon in Rochester, it is just off of Highland Avenue at (one of) the entrances to Highland Park. From the Spanish Ship Castilla. A bit newer and I would guess a bit more formidable for the times... Will have to check out the one at Cornell when down there next.

Thanks for posting your photos, Mike. Here's another one of the same gun that I had saved, I don't recall from where.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.
