Idea options for a front sight to a std. S-BH
« on: August 21, 2012, 05:40:05 AM »
Im thinking that the integral blade could be milled off and the right dovetail cut on the remaining ramp to take the many Redhawk front sights available. The sight base proper may need to be narrowed and a set screw used to lock it in place front the front.
Anybody done this? Q,C, or S?
Too bad Ruger didnt do this on the S-BH way back when they introduced the Redhawk, or sometime since.......... :-\ (other than the Hunter mdl).

Looks like no on this particular 'conversion'......
How about just milling the blade off, cutting in a std. 3/8 dovetail on the remaining ramp/base and using one of many available posts, beads etc. with the narrow dovetail.

I believe a little easier way is to wack off the sight blade then "plunge cut" a slot in the sight base. A "roll pin" or set screw can then be used to anchor the sight blade to the base but also permit changing of blades.

If I remember correctly,  Mr. Bowen has info and parts at his web site.

You are probably right about 'taking the plunge', though the dovetail conversions Ive seen look mighty good. I found one site that tells the Marbles ramp part # and you remove the whole S BH sight to do it, then can fit in any of the medium width selection of typically rifle sights. IIRC the Ruger base under the attached blade runs about .340 wide and I have the DT cutter already, so its relatively easy for me to cut off the blade, mill it flat, cut the DT to the proper depth and fit any of the Marbles, etc. selection without removing the base at all.
Im surprised that Ive found scant info online, short of the expensive custom 'smiths, for this, it ain't that unusual or hard.

SBHs have come with several front sight options.  Sweated on one piece sight, sweated on base with removable blade, and screw on front sight.

My 44 is a stainless that has the stainless ramp, and a blue blade held in place by a roll pin.  I ordered the taller blade that was used on the stainless 45LC to get my point of aim lower (I was high with rear sight bottomed out.)  Some of the early guns made for IHMSA shooters had a 10" "bull" barrel and a screw on sight.  This is what my 357 max has.  Same Patridge style as the Mark II was typically used.  I helped design an aftermarket set used by Silhouette shooters.  Bomar Rear and Lansing front base with globe and post.

You can order a barrel from Ruger or even find them sometimes on Gunbr.... auction site that have the drilled and tapped hole.  Replace the barrel and put any screw-on sight you want.
