Swab between shots
« on: September 01, 2012, 05:16:33 PM »
I picked up a BP barrel for my Encore and was trying to read all of the info I could before I took it out. I see the majority of folks swab the barrel after a couple of shots. Being the lasy person I am, will a bore snake do the job or should I take all of my cleaning rods and junk. I dont have a problem with dedicating a boresnake to the cause.

Butts, swabbing is a function of the powder residue and the fit of the bullet, bullet/patch or bullet/sabot combination.  Blackhorn 209 is the odds on favorite powder for not having to swab a barrel when using a 209 primer as it burns very efficiently and leaves very little residue.

TC muzzleloading rifles have the tightest bores in the industry but I'm not familiar with the TC swap barrel dimensions and know there are aftermarket ones, too.  In any case, the Harvester Muzzleloading Crushed Rib sabots and Magnum Muzzleloading Products (mmpsabots.com) sabots will give you some great choices that cover a wide range of bore and bullet diameters.

The ribs on the crushed rib sabot are forgiving enough to get bullets from .451 to .458 bullet down my .50 Savage with good accuracy.  MMP make several diameters of sabots to accommodate different barrel and bullet combos.  In any case you will save a lot of money over time and probably get better results by purchasing you sabots and bullets separately.

A BoreSnake might work but the swabs are usually dampened with a bit of spit (hence the term "spit patch") or a cleaner to get the residue out.  I don't think a dry bore snake is going to do as well but it could be worth a try.  I'm not familiar with the TC Encore barrels but wouldn't you need to remove a breechplug every shot to use a BoreSnake?

My advice is to get some Blackhorn 209 and an assortment of sabots.  BH 209 wants a full power primer, not a reduced power "muzzleloading" primer.  What bullet were you thinking of trying first?

Good luck with the new barrel.

I have T/C encore and I have to clean mine every 3rd shot I use a wet patch to clean mine I just use the ram rod. I have to admit my accuracy with my encore is not as good as my omega. Might be just my gun but I'm still playing with it.

It seems to me if you use a bore snake with pyro or t7 it would get real nasty fast and not do a very good job for swabbing between shots and you would have to remove your breech plug when using the snake.

i wouldn't think swabbing would have any
effect when using projectiles that utilize
plastic to engage the rifling.
i swab every two or three shots with a spit
patch when range shooting, but i use patched
balls or ball-ets

I swab with windex between shots.  I can't get a sabot down the barrel if I don't.

agree with the use of blackhorn, i used imr pellets, and loose pyrodex with my optima and barnes mx, after 3 shots with either, those sabots were a bear to get down the barrel, another consideration is no so much the fouling the length of the barrel, but you can develop a crud ring, which can give a false "feel" the bullet being completely seated when its not. since using black horn no crud ring and easier loading even after 10 shots

I'm using T7 and this is my experience also. Swab with damp patch after each shot and follow with dry patch twice to dry before the next shot. I then duplicate this slightly fouled barrel by popping off a primer before loading to go hunting. Works for me. Only bore tighter than an Encore I've experienced was a Austin&Halleck inline.

trying to read and learn here

sabots and modern conicals must
fit the bore waaaaaaaay tighter
than i thought.

i've always used sidelocks and
it's no problem at all to seat a
projectile.

the bullet i am using now the thor actually has to sized to the bore, my cva mountain rifle uses .502 my optima .500 but man are they accurate! plus with blackhorn no swabbing it maybe a sin but i use a 209 adapter on the sidelock to get the blackhorn to light consistently.

If you don't want to swab BH209 is the way to go, The powder residue is very fine and like a lubricant I can shoot all day without swabbing.
