.45-70 Bullet Question
« on: September 11, 2012, 06:17:47 PM »
OK, time to order some more reloading supplies. I'd like to know what bullet my fellow .45-70 Handi-Holic's would recommend. I'll be shooting lever gun loads out of my BC. Where I hunt my shots might be anywhere from 30 feet to 250 yards. I'm kinda leaning toward the 350 gr. Hornady RN. I'll be using them for deer.
I've used 300 HP, 405 FN and 325 FTX factory ammo in the past (only got a deer with the 300 gr. HP). I've been loading the Goex Black Dawg 450 gr. LFN at 1500 fps.
I can't decide to get more 450 gr LFN, go with the 350 gr. RN, or or try the 325 gr. FTX. So, any recommendations from my friends would be greatly appreciated.

I do not know if you know this, but the Hornady 350 RN is designed for the 458 Win mag. It can work well in the 45-70 for top loadings at closer ranges.

The 350 FP is a better choice if you want a 350g bullet.

I prefer the 400 Speer or the 405Remington at about 17-1900 fps. IMR 4198 or RL7 will get you to these velocities.

I agree with CW.  I'm getting 1950 fps with the .405 Remington over IMR4198.  It is deadly accurate and reaches out there.  It's not a lot of fun off the bench or plinking :o

I use the Lee 450gr FN that I cast myself and size to .459" over any sane load.  I have fired these with subsonic loads that were going about 400fps on up to warm loads at 1950fps and get no leading at all in my BC with them.  I haven't fired a single jacketed bullet through mine so can't make a recommendation, but these give me 2-3" groups at 100yds with the issue aperture sight the BC came with.

There is no need to beat yourself up unless you are just into the pain thing. I have used the 300 gr for years over 47 gr of RL7, I believe that that will put you close to 2000 fps out of that long tube. If you were in Africa the 400+ gr might be called for, but not Arkansas.

I like hard cast 405g round nose flat points. It's pretty much the only bullet I load for 45-70.
