Cast Bullet help?
« on: February 07, 2004, 05:36:12 AM »
I asked the question about the 200gr xtp and apprecaiate all the advice. I would like to try a heavy cast bullet in my SBHH and need some help. I know nothing about cast bullets and need some reccomendation on what bullet to try as far as weight and style. Since I don't cast my own it needs to be commercially avalible. I figure deer sseason is along ways off so I might as well experiment with different load combo's. I would also like to know what cleaning methods you guys use to keep leading and copper fouling to a miniumum. Well I am off to burn some more powder.

Thanks,
Erick

i use a lee 310 gr. cast.   the mold was about $16 for a two bullet mold; you can shoot them with a gas check or without.  i run mine at about 1000fps and get good results on the recieving end and recoil is about nil.  cheap shooting fun.

my best advise to you if you dont want to cast your own is to go to cast performance or mount baldys web sight and possibly emai them to get there recomendation as to what they carry for your intended purpose. Both kelly from cast performance and frank from mount baldy are real nice people i do believe that there is an advitiser on this forum that sells bullets also that ive heard good things about but have not tried anything he makes so i cant really comment on them maybe someone else could help you. Bottom line is that if you want to shoot quality cast bullets in your gun you should take the time to learn how to make your own. Get a cheap lee mold and a bucket of ww and give it a try its not rocket sience. In a couple days youll be making good bullets

As far as cleaning after shooting cast bullets, it's way over exagerated in my book.  I shoot only cast in my 45 B Hawk and 94 carbine.  I don't have a leading problem at all.  That's with hunting velocity loads and plinker loads too.  If you get leading with a commercial bullet, a lot of times the answer is to shoot faster since store-bought bullets tend to be too hard for the pressure generated with a particular load.  If they do lead though, back in the days when I bought some cast bullets, I coated them in Lee Alox and the problem disappeared.

I'll shoot five or six jacketed bullets at the end of a cast bullet shooting session.  It gets any lead out pretty well.  I shoot the Lyman 429421 250 gr cast bullet.  Mostly I shoot this bullet out of my S&W 44 Special.  I cast them from whatever scrap lead I can scrounge (mostly wheel weights).

I use a 300 gr gas checked LFN from Cast Performance in my Ruger Bisley. Excellent accuracy, and no leading problems.

Worked up a load for my SBH Bisley Hunter----have found good 1.5"  groups with open sights (bag rested) and old eyes out to 50 yd---will try 100 yds. with a scope after the annual ice age ends:    310gr True Shot wnfp gc bullet from Oregon Trail Bullets (24 Brinell hardness) over 21.0gr H110 in Starline brass with CCI large pistol magnum primers----chronoed at 1385fps in the heat last August. Stout load---probably max at 85 degrees air temp.----who knows in Feb. in Wisconsin?      pg

Myronman,

What powder and charge weight do you use with the 310 gr 44 caliber bullet?  Is this in a 44 Magnum?

I think I still have to give the nod to the 429421 Keith bullet over 22/2400/mag primer . Accurate and powerful enough for most things you will find in the lower 48 unless you happen on to a hog the size of a volkswaggon . I thinh the old man was on to something when he came up with this  as well as some of his other bullets like 358429 and his heavy 45 bullet (don't remember the number right now). The 44 load has been used to harvest (aka kill em dead) animals all over the world. Just my thoughts  every one should shoot what they like and works well for them .

with this 310 grain bullet (no gas check)  i use 9 grains unique and a magnum cci large pistol primer and i get right around 1000 fps (give or take a few fps).   this is out of a 7 1/2 inch bbl.  my contender posts a bit higher.   i have more experimenting to do with this bullet, but i have to wait until the weather warms up.

325 gr WLN with gascheck from beartooth bullets at www.beartoothbullets.com   21gr h110 works good in my SBH. As always start a little lower and work up. H110 does best near max tho.
