AA1680
« on: September 11, 2012, 11:58:30 AM »
I'm going to start loading my 357max with aa1680. It sounds like thats the best starting point for both max's. I also read people having a lot of good results with it in their 45-70s. Just trying to keep from buying several different powders just staring off. If possible I'd like to keep it simple and safe.

Good afternoon,
While I love 1680 and agree its a good choice for the maxi. Its not a great choice for the 45-70.

There are a number of good powders for each caliber but very little overlap unfortunately. They are quite different cartridages.

The 45-70 is a large case operating at lower pressures. While the maxi is a realitively hi pressured caliber. (for a handgun caliber)  They require different powders, trying to use one powder for both, will result in two possibilities. One is being a caliber is pushed too hard or one under preforming.

Faster burning powders are not such a good idea in large cases and compaired to the Maxi, the 45-70 is cavernous.

Let me ask a couple questions:
What are your intentions for these calibers? I mean are you target/plinking or hunting?  Maybe another powder could work for both if you don't need top preformance.

Gonna hunt with both. I figured the 2 would be better off with there own powders. Just thought I'd get some more info before I got excited. Lol

I have the Lyman's 49th edition. Not much on Hornadys bullets there.
I have hornady 300gr HP & Hornady 180gr XTP
I've looked on Hornadys site but didn't find any load info for them.

As far as the 45/70, my load for 300 gr jacketed is 47 gr of RL7- my "747" load. That should be just a little over factory 300gr load specs. I know I have heard several others here list their accuracy loads within a grain +- that. You would need to work that up in your own gun, but RL7 is a good powder for it.

How about primers? What makes 1 primer hotter than another? Just looking at the the same loads with different primers and there is quite abut difference. I need to buy more books for sure. Hehehe.

Thanx for puttin up with my questions.

1680 is good in the pistol cartridges and it also works well in a .22 Hornet or 17 Hornet.  If you use real heavy bullets in the .357 you can load it down to subsonic with 1680.  With primers, I would pick one that will do all of what you load for, once you work up a load with a primer type just keep using it, some times a hotter primer can reduce pressure in a load, so just start low and work up.  CCI makes a bunch of primers for all sorts of loads, I just use CCI 450's or BR4's in every thing that uses small rifle primers or small pistol primers, they are hard and will take whatever pressure you have in the case, they are great in the high pressure cases like a 17 Remington or 17 FB and will work in the .357 cases.  Larry

Thanx, I bought Remington primers for the Rem brass on the 45-70. I read somewhere to match he brass with primers or it might of been in the Lymanns. Gonna try the 1680 with cci450s and see what happens. Thanx again.

RL7 can work in both, but you will not get enough in the littler maxi case for good preformance. But it will be safe. ;)

RL7 is a nice 45-70 powder for top loadings tho!  :)

I haven't seen and lil-gun loads for the 45-70, I am not sure its a safe choice...  :-\ :-\

PLEASE becareful if your "experimenting". Following manuels is your best choice untill you get to know and have experience with powders and burning rates. Some powders DO NOT play nice when changing amounts...

I'm not going to experiment with any of this. Just gonna pick up individual powders for each. I need to quit procrastinating and get busy.
