Lee collet die?
« on: September 17, 2012, 01:44:24 PM »
I was going to load some 6.5x55 ammo this morning. When I opened the die set I was surprised to find a Lee collet die that I must have purchased awhile back. In the course of sizing 25  once fired cases, I spit the necks on two of them.
Is this to be expected when using the collet dies?

I have used Lee collet dies and haven't had a problem with split necks. Just wondering, did you adjust the collet die according to Lee's instructions ? The adjustment is different for a Lee press as opposed to other brands of presses. I am not sure if this would cause a split neck, maybe. Other than that I would recheck my brass. Ron...

I have used Lee collet dies a lot and never had a problem with split necks. Hmmm makes me wonder if the necks are work hardened...how many times has the cases been loaded?

As much as I dislike that die, I would guess that the problem was bad brass. A while back I bought a bunch of win. 204 brass and split a bunch of neck in from first load to 3 rd. loading.

No doubt it is your brass. I see no way that you could split a neck with a collet die otherwise.  Much more likely with a standard die and even the it would be the brass as the culprit.

Once fired RP Brass.  Shouldn't be work hardened at this point.  I did have the die set incorrectly so I guess it's a lesson learned.  I will try again at some point as these dies make sizing and loading a much quicker process.

I resized some old 4x's fired Norma brass this afternoon with no issues. I guess it helps to follow directions.
