So, next up is a 35-30/30 project. I have read several good threads in the archives that have been helpful in making this decision. Based on what I have been reading, hand-loading in an SB2 rifle can deliver up to the bottom edge (where recoil would back me off anyway) of 375 Win performance and can more comfortably exceed factory 35 Rem performance. I see this as rounding out my rifle portfolio (for the time being) with my sporterized Swedish Mauser as my "long" range rifle, the 35-30/30 Handi and Marlin 336 30-30 Texan as my 200 - 100 yard rifles, and my 45LC/454 Handi as my short range Thumper.

I plan on this one being a real simple woods rifle, open sights or Williams peep sight, BC stock or a straight grip and Schnabel forend from Gunstocks. I will send a 30-30 barrel to JES for the rebore but I have two questions that I am hoping you might be able to answer:

First I am unsure about twist rate. 35 Rem and 35 Whelen tend to be 1:16 as far as I can tell, but with a 22" barrel and an interest in shooting heavier (more than 250 gr), probably cast, bullets, I am thinking 1:14 would be better. Is that tight enough in your considered opinion or would 1:12 be more the thing? With open sights, this will be 150 yards rifle maybe 200, so loaded to Handi level velocities and staying at 300 gr and under 1:14 just seems right.

Second, I don't understand grooves. Jesse offers 3, 4 or 5 groove rifling. I don't know what to ask for. Your explanation would be helpful.

Sounds like a good project. Good way to use old 30-30 brass. I have two Handi rifles by JES and both have the 3 groove rifling. They shoot great. I would go with the 1-14" twist.

I have no complaints with my 3-groove JES Handis, a 9.3x62 1:12", and a 376 Steyr 1:14", I'd rely on Jesse's recommendation, prolly the faster twist for 250gr at 30-30 velocities would work best tho. My 1:16" 35 Whelen Ultra shoots 250gr spitzers just fine, but at considerably higher velocities than the 30-30 can push em.

The 35-30 is an old round it was a way to save old 30-30's that where eat up by corrossive powder and primers. It works well.  The one I have got likes 180's and 200's better then the 250's

I can't help you with twist rate, sorry.
 
As far as how many grooves, I have read that the two groove Springfields shoot very well.  I wouldn't hesitate to use whatever Jesse recomends or go with a three groove.
 
I've never had a 35-30 but I really like the concept.  Since it's just a bit smaller than the 38-55 I would imagine you'd get simiar power levels.  Good luck with it and please check back with us and let us know how it goes.  Inquiring minds you know . . .

I ran a 35/30-30 250gr NP thru QL software, best velocity from a 22" barrel using their 40kpsi limit is about 2000fps which would fall within their velocity range for terminal performance for reliable expansion but not for very far having a minimum impact velocity rquirement of 1800fps, but other 250gr jacketed bullets I checked  fall outside the capability of the small case capacity of the 30-30, for instance the minimum muzzle velocity for Hornady 250gr bullets is 2300fps.  A 225gr Nosler BT would get you a bit further with a min impact velocity of 1600fps. Of course cast bullets with a good size meplat would work well at most any reasonable velocity I think. Using 250gr bullets would require some throat work I would think as well, if not, about ¾" of bullet will need to be seated in the case using up the limited case capacity, an improved version would definitely be beneficial.

Thanks Tim. I was thinking that gas checked hardcast bullets would be ideal. I will ask Jesse to give it a little room in the throat to make sure the big fellas will clear. For clarification when you reference "their 40k psi limit" is that a QL software limit, or a Nosler limit?  In any event, 250 gr at 2,000 fps is pretty impressive from this little round! I suppose 220s are a better bet for jacketed bullets.

QL lists it as a wildcat with a max pressure of 39987psi, well within an SB2's capability.  ;)

The 40k psi limit is in deference to the 1894 Winchesters and the older 30-30 (balloon head) cases. The one I have was a 32 win spl with basically no rifling left. It made it a shooter again without losing the original barrel and all it markings.

If'n a feller wants to, the 30-30 can be run considerably higher on an SB2 platform, I run my 30-30AI Handi to a QL estimated 60kpsi in 375 Win brass, dunno if 30-30 brass would last very many reloadings at that pressure tho.

Jesse Ocumpaugh of JES Reboring, he rebores/rechambers barrels, he doesn't make Handi barrels. He turns whatcha got into whatcha want! For me he's done a 376 Steyr from a 22" 7mm-08, a 9.3x62 Mauser from a 20" 243 Superlight, and a 50-140 Sharps from a 32" 45-70.

WOW, I love this place! Ya'll got me thinkin bout all kinds of rebores now. What would be a good candidate for a 338 federal and 6.5-06?

Both doable! Altho a favorite 6.5/06 would be at the upper limits. (Assuming you are loading to 270 ballistics. Handis are chambered for the 270. ;) ) I built one up on a 1909 Argentine Mauser some years back. Its a great and efficient cartridage!

338 Fed would seem to be a excellent candidate for the Handi platform!

I think the 1:16" twist would work well.  I contemplated the 35/30-30 but settled on a .356 Win. Both are capable cartridges in their own right, one does well choosing either.
