Fire lapping - how I know when stop?
« on: September 30, 2012, 06:26:42 AM »

Dear Veral,

I have a carbine Maghtec 22, semi-auto. I used the PUSH THROUGH SLUG and found out that the bore is very rough. There are several constrictions and large spots. In special, about the middle of the barrel, the diameter of the bore is slight larger than the rest (along about 2,5 inch).

Then I resolved firelapping the bore, as follow:

First day: I shot about 60-70 rounds. The push trough slug showed that the bore is smoother than before, but still remain several constrictions. The accuracy had a very small improvement.

Second day: I shot more 50 rounds. Yes, this time there was a significant improvement in accuracy, but still remain constrictions and large spots in the bore.

Third day: More 50 rounds were shot. Wow! Accuracy is much better now! The sizes of the groups were reduced by half or maybe almost a third!
There was a wonderful improvement in accuracy, indeed.

But the push through slug shows that the constrictions and large spots remain after all firelapping work, although less.

So, I am wondering if I must firelapping until I remove all imperfections in the bore or just stop now, because I reached a lot of accuracy improvement. What do you think about?

If I keep firellaping until I am able to remove all imperfections is there  a possibility of ruin the bore?

Thank you very much.

Push through slugs should run smoothly, but actually a small constriction of a half thousandth, (thickness of saran wrap) do no harm to accuracy, though they are felt with a push through.  Do NOT worry abuot cleaning up a barrel to a perfect finish.  We only need to smooth the high sopts uniformly to get top accuracy and fredom from accuracy.

In short if you are really happy with accuracy, quit lapping.

“ In short if you are really happy with accuracy, quit lapping.”  -   As the groups are now almost three times smaller and the cleaning process is extremely easy, then I think that I’m really happy with the results!
Thank you.
