Today is the 42nd anniversary of…
« on: September 18, 2012, 03:47:15 PM »
Jimi Henrix died 42 years ago today, Sept 18. 1970 in London at age 27 (drugs). Coined the father of psychedelic music, he was the most influential musician of the hippie era and quite a showman. Most considered him the greatest guitarist of all time. As a lead guitar player for nearly a decade myself in bands, he WAS impressive playing a right hand Fender Stratocaster left handed in person.

I first saw him perform at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967, after it again in San Francisco at the Avalon and Fillmore. At Monterey Pop he put on a performance I’ll never forget. “The Wind Cries Mary” and Purple Haze” are two of the most representative of all psychedelic music. Not that I am all for that music, but just have to give him the credit he earned. Jimi burned his guitar on stage for what will always be remembered as the most dramatic climax in rock and roll history

Great picture of that night and him playing his Stratocaster before he burned it.

I have all the performances recorded of the Montery Pop – if anybody is interested, here is The Jimi Hendrix Experience doing Purple Haze at it. It’s a 5,300 KB mp3 file and about 5 ˝ minutes long.

Another 42nd anniversary coming up… watch for my post about another at Monterey Pop that who made an even bigger impression on me. Will include picture(s) and one of the songs performed on Oct 4th.   No guessing to ruin it for the others please.

Definitely the most influential guitarist in rock music. There will never be another. I love "Rock Me Baby" live at Monterey and "Machine Gun" at the Isle of Wight.

Imagine being found unsuitable for military life... :D ;) and mustered out!

Intersting time for the military, interesting for me to think back and remember those times. The draft during the Vietnam era brought a lot of undesirables into the services.   That was OK with Big Brother though, they had lots of body bags to fill over there.    ::)

Some recruits were undesirable for many reasons that varied widely, but not necessarily for intentionally not following the UCMJ, etc.   More often for personal habits, laziness, just plain too uneducated (or downright dumb) or not physically able fit some of them.   And some of them "faked" same so they could get out in boot.   So mustered out was common enough in boot camp when I was there in 1967, and they usually got an AELS discharge, neither honorable or dishonorable, unless for just cause to get a punitive DC, BC or GOTH.

I remember a few who were mustered out simply because they couldn't do the basic requirements of boot.   Many of those were Filipino's who sign up for a 6 year hitch in the Navy to gain US citizenship.   They did nothing legally wrong, actually tried very hard... but just couldn't make the grade.   Most got AELS discharges I think.   I remember one in particular, Arturo Aurora (spelling?).   Remember him both because he was quite small and thin unlike most of the other Filipinos, and because he was the best in the company and battalion when it came to drill and inspections, was always in the top 10% on written tests.   As the RCPO of the company I called on him often to help others struggling in our company with military requirements.  Very sharp guy, very hard working, and very well liked in our company.   But he just couldn't pass any of the water tests... basic swimming, floating with a PFD made from his clothing in the water, or the high tower jump.   Out of the ordinary he was allowed to try several times, our CCO and BCO really wanted him to pass.  Being on a ship would have been out of the question for him, so they finally had no choice but to send him to SEPS.   Pretty sure he got a GUHC instead of the AELS simply because he was an exceptional squirrel otherwise.

After boot a discharge for undesirables or for just cause was more often either an AOTH, DD or BC.   Which makes Jimi's honorable discharge as an undesirable "interesting" to me.  Probably should have been a GOTH.

Matters not, he accomplished more, did far more good as a musician than he ever would have as a soldier IMO.

Every once in a while a real genius comes along and changes everything by raising standards and refocusing effort. Hendrix was such a man.

And the Wind Cries Mary
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.
