Create a modern 9mm rimfire style shotgun but in centerfire
« on: September 15, 2012, 10:56:45 AM »
For no other reason than I think it would be fun and maybe of limited value as a close in garden style gun I would like to create a modern 9mm rimfire style shotgun but in centerfire. Was thinking or trying to fine a old wore out .22 Hornet barrel for my NEF frame and have it bored out to a smoothbore .357" and then chambered for a .357 Maximum case. The old 9mm rimfire, shot 1/4 oz (110 grain) load of shot at appox. 600 fps. I was thinking of increasing this to a 1/3 oz (145 grain) load of shot at appox. 1050 fps. which seems to be easy to do.

I know that I can shoot a 2 1/2" .410 and have several of these. I just think this would be a great in-between thing and rather unique and fun. Of couse the big issue will be in obtaining the barrel and having it fitted to my action and bored and chambered. Any idea's on who I could get to do this at a price I could afford?

Anyway, what do you all think? .">

I like the idea , however , why not just get a 357 mag barrel and ream it to max ? This would give you a Handi that would cover everything from mice to deer .

Making a shot round in a max case would not be hard and the rifling would not be an issue for the ranges that it would be used for .

Perhaps you could just have a bore liner, an insert. I have seen them advertised for other things, why not a mini shotgun insert you could put IN a 410, or a 44 mag barrel etc?

I already do have a .357 mag barrel and .357 max. barrels. The trouble is the rifling. A friend has a original smooth bore 9mm RF shotgun and using the all brass cases it will keep all the shot in a 6" circle at 21 feet. In my experiments with loading to the same power levels and same shot capacity (2.5gr Bullseye and 110gr of shot) in both the Mag. case & Max case the pattern opens up to over 11x14" (standard piece of paper). This is loaded with a hard cardboard over powder wad tight to the powder the shot and then a hard cardboard over shot wad and then sealed with yellow wood glue to the case mouth.....james

I have thought of the barrel liner and will explore that. A full barrel length liner in my Savage .22/.410 would be cool....

I use speer shot shell's in 38 and 357, load them with #9 shot to buckshot.Like Stimpy said the rifling wont be much of a issue at the ranges you'll be shooting. Or you could take a 357 barrel and drill the rifling out to a smooth bore. :'( I have a old S&W mod.10 I did that with about 10 yrs. ago for a boat gun, sure knocks the snot out of water moccasins, takes there head right off.
an unloaded wepon is equal to the same mass and volume as a rock.

Something interesting about shotgun barrels and the shells... The shell dosen't care what the bore diameter is... it only knows when its reduced from what it is...

Meaning all you would need is a chamber incert with a short tapered tube, not a complete barrel liner to make a 9mm shotgun from a 410 shotgun. Think or search "410er" insert.

CW is on the money with his post. Here is a link to a company that makes shotgun adapters. http://store.dinaarms.com/

I have their 20 gauge to 9mm adapter but as you can see they have several other calibers available. Mine is rifled though but since its made of aluminum im sure that could be drilled out easily enough. There are also other online manufacturers that sell similar inserts that are not rifled.

If you were to make up your home loaded 9mm shotshells and fire them from a choked shotgun the 9mm shell will perform to the same choke or close to it that the 20 gauge shell would. So if the 20 gauge barrel is full choke the 9mm shell fired from the insert will perform very close full choke aswell.

If you fire lap your 357 mag or maxi barrel using jacketed instead of cast boolits I think you can probably remove your rifling in just a few shots.  IIRC, there was a previous thread about a fellow that unintentionally fire lapped the rifling out of his Handi 223.

Just take one of the .357 barrels and ream the rifleing out of it.  I did that to a .22lr barrel to make a kids shotgun, it shot well and it is dead easy to do.  I gave it to someone on the board for their kids, hope they are still shooting it.  Larry

My pops used to load 357 mag shot shells. He would load a fast pistol powder, I don't remember the type or amount, but the would seat a gas check over the powder add shot then put an upside down gas check on top with a slight crimp. He said it was great snake load. If I remember correctly he used wadcutter data for powder and shot load.

I have a single shot bolt action 9mm Flobert made by Suhl, they also call it a garden gun, very fun gun to shoot. Fiocchi makes ammo for them $20 for 50 rnds, Graf's carries it. The shotguns show up for sale occasionally.  Maybe ream out a 22 barrel for the 9mm Flobert round, could be an interesting project. I just had a .22 barrel rebored to .32 s&w long, and have one more .22 barrel left. Now you got me thinking about this.

This Handi addiction can be a terrible thing!!!!

I have been thinking about a handi in 9mm flobert ever since I read this thread. My first thought was to ream out a barrel but I think the best way would be to sleeve the chamber in a .410 barrel. This way I will have a barrel with a choke and it will be much easier. I don't know if I will have to modify the firing pin or not, I don't own a sportster but what a great reason to buy one, there is a gun show this weekend and I will be looking for one and a .410 barrel.
