Ruger #1 in 460! Any Hoosiers using this next deer season?

I enjoy the pistol caliber rifles. I shoot 41 mag, 357 mag, 44 mag, and 458 socom. These are the rifles I have taken deer in our great state with.

My next quest is the S&W 460.
Was hoping for an offering my Marlin ala 1894, but have not seen anything yet.
I have considered an Encore barrel (already use an Encore muzzle loader 50 cal).
Recently I saw and held my first Ruger #1, calibered in 460...I may be smitten.

Any body have one of these?

Any thoughts and opinions are welcome.

I tell you what I did. When they extended the cartridge length to 1.800 that opened up a bunch of possibilities. My Dad and I put together a rifle for my wife (I'm a bowhunter). What we did was take a .45-70 cartridge and shortened it to 1.800. We called it the .458 Hoosier and I had some custom brass made with .458 HOOSIER as the head stamp. I had Bullberry Barrel Works in Utah build me a barrel and chamber it for this cartridge. The barrel was built for the T/C Encore action. I had them make the stock and forend as well. It turned out really nice. It was a neat project for a one off rifle for my wife. This is the kind of cool stuff we can do here in Indiana. Here's a pic or two:

HappyHunter, .460 sw should take out any armor plated deer you will find in Indiana

Quikdtoo said it would be his choice should he live out here.

Rick Iosn your .458 hoosier should also do anything you need out here. Congrats for setting your wife up!

Myself I am building a .358 winchester short for the new regs

. It will look good next to the .357 Maxi and .445 Super Mag in the cabnet

Hey Happy Hunter...Rocky Mountain Cartridge did my brass. I ordered just 60 cases and it was like $180 bucks. That sounds high, but most people that do custom brass want LARGE minimum quantities and plenty of $$$$. It's actually a bargain if you want something custom.

Vic49....We are still toying around with loads. I have a load worked up for the wife that is right around 2000fps with a 300gr. bullet. The recoil isn't that bad really. It's very shootable for her. I had a soft Pachmayr pad put on and the comb of this stock is actually higher than a factory T/C stock. When you mount the gun, you are looking straight down the barrel of the scope. No lifting the head off of the stock. Bullberry starts the taper of their T/C barrels a little further forward than factory T/C as well. This allows them to drill and tap for the scope base further forward. The eye relief is absolutely perfect. I am a competitive sporting clays shooter and gun fit is everything in the shotgun sports. I personally think that people don't pay enough attention to gun fit on rifles. This gun fits the wife PERFECT. That helps a ton in managing recoil.

Had a Ruger #1 .460 last year. Tried a dozen different loads in .460 and .454 never could get it to shoot.

I must say I am sorry to hear of this.

My other option is an Encore barrel. They (TC) seems to only offer these in a 20 in rifle barrel. I would prefer a little longer.

Did you try the folks up on the Ruger forum for help? I have heard of a couple people down this way using .460 and .454, but dont know how accurrate they got them to shoot.

A good buddy of mine has a #1 in 460S&W. I got to shoot it a couple times and it was bug-hole accurate at 100 yards. He even worked up some loads that were minute-of-deer out to around 275 yards, where it was still haulin a whole lotta energy!

If you don't mind the recoil, it's a dang good option.

Happy Hunter, I have an Encore in .460 carbine. It is most likely going to be my go to deer gun this year unless I buy a 1.8" .35 cal wildcat WSSM.

Are you shooting the 445 Super Mag out of a rifle? Have you shot any cast bullets in it?

First off Welcome to Gray Beards.
My .445 sm is a H&R Handi rifle. I have not tried cast. For that matter we have only fired the .445 only a couple times. Have fired a few .44 240 loads. They were ok but am hoping for better, when I get some 265 gr loads loaded. Not really worked at loads yet.

Purchased an MGM barrel for my Encore, 60 prepped brass, and 20 loaded rounds. Got them at the Indy Gun show last Friday.

Next I will order my custom dies and an optic.

I'm considering the same thing. I was at the 1500 Saturday, but couldn't find Mr. Brown's table.

Do you have any load info on the round yet?

I plan to start with 358 win data and start at extreme low end and start up looking for high pressure signs all the way.

What a great looking rifle ..... I was thinking of getting a 450 Marlin lever and trimming the case to 1.8 (about .300 difference) but was worry about feeding problems. I also heard a rumor that your have to have the propoer caliber weapon

? I have a 357 Max and thinking about CVA Scout in 44 mag reaming to 445 SM. Decisions decisions

Just seen this posting and thought I'd put my two cents in.
I have a encore with the 20" 460 barrel and it is very accurate. I shot my first muledeer in montana with one at 230 yrds away and dropped him in his tracks. I also shot a doe at 50 yrds with one.
To tell you the truth I personally think its to powerful for the smaller whitetails here in Indiana.
The buck mully I shot, the bullet never exited but that was at 230 yrds. Now the doe at 50 yrds the bullet never exited either and neither bullet hit bone.
Now last year In Indiana I used the same gun but with the 454 casull loads in it. They went all the way thru the deer and also hit a rib or two on the way out (shot three does), and also dropped them in their tracks,these were shot at 50 to 100 yrds away.

Now this year I got out my rifle to do some practice with it with the 460 loads from hornady.

The second shot did my scope in ,it broke the cross hairs in it. It was a bushnell trophy hunter.

I'm sticking to the 454 casull loads in it, much easier on the shoulder too when sighting it in.

I also forgot to add that the amount of carnage the 460 did was incredible. The amount of meat that was ruined was about 8 lbs per deer.

The 454 was alot less.
Both rounds were Hornady. The 460 were 200 grn 200 ftx and the 454 were 300 gr jhp/xtp/mag.
Here is a pic of the scopes cross hairs.
Also I found out,with the 460, that with the lighter gun a good grip on the forearm is a must. When benching it also, otherwise it will tag your eye if you don't have enough eye relief.

I use a 45LC Handi rifle in Indiana. I feel good taking shots out to 100yds with it. I shoot cast bullets and I can eat all the way up to the hole.

I recently purchased a #1 460 and topped it off with a Leupold VX II 3x9x40 using medium rings. Plenty of clearance - Wanted to use low rings... but needed to consider giving up cheek-weld for cartridge manipulation. Scope is holding up well. 1.5" groups all day. I'd rather shoot this off the bench versus a locked breach slug gun!
