Bull in my back yard!!

Hi, I had to share these photo's of a bull elk in my back yard a few weeks ago. The Smoky National Park reintroduced elk in the park around 10 years ago. They now have a herd that is around 150 animals and some have started to move of the park. I live about 40 miles from the part of the park that elk herd lives, so I was shocked to see this nice animal in my back yard. I live one mile off Western Carolina University's campus in Western North Carolina.

I didn't expect to see any of those in Cullowhee. I live in Bryson City and have heard of them being as far down as Deep Creek.

A game warden once told me that if you found them outside of the county they were introduced, they could be harvested and tagged as a deer. This was a Virginia warden though and the laws may be different here in NC. However, I would have a hard time pulling the trigger on such a majestic animal that is just making a comeback on the east coast. I will probably wait until they establish a season before I try to harvest one. I'll let you know if they show up near Hanging Rock state park
